Burning smell when pressing gas pedal a bit hard

My '05 G35 (75K miles) seems to have lost tremendous amount of power, especially at the first and second gear (It's an AT). I replaced the air filter (It was dirty as hell), spark plugs, cleaned the throttle body & MAF sensor about a month ago.

Lately, the car has been producing a burning smell (not major) when I press the gas pedal and take the RPM to ~ 5000.

I kind of checked the air filter ... I didn't remove the whole box to fully inspect it though, and it looked a bit dirty.

I have mainly been using Shell '93 Octane and typically use a fuel treatment (over the shelves at gas stations) every now and then (about twice a month).

Opinions? Recommendations?

Thank you

You shouldn't need to run a fuel treatment through your car that often(twice a month) if you're using gas from a clean station.

Does the car sound any different? Maybe your cat. converters are clogged.

Thank you.

That's what I am planning on cleaning up next weekend.

I get this same problem. My stock cats are perfectly fine and I replaced them with HFC's and I still get this smell under heavy acceleration.

I was planning on replacing my cats, yet I opt against it after hearing that my car may not pass the inspection in Houston. Is that true?

I'm not a mechanic, but I don't think the problem is in your fuel system, because fuel doesn't have a burning smell. When you smell fuel...you smell fuel. Usually if you smell something burning it's oil or tranny fluid. Check for visible leaks and black or gray smoke from the exhaust. It may also be something internal to the engine...then you might want to check the engines compression to see if you have any leaking cylinders or valves. Again, I'm not a mechanic...just making suggestions.

Thanks NavEngineer.

I have already scheduled an appt with the dealer to do an engine compression test and a complete check-up.

There are HFC's that are legal in texas, and others that are not. I got Kinetix Racing HFC's which throw no CEL/SES light and are supposed to be 50 state legal I believe but I dont believe anything companys say seeing how I live in California and everything is more strict. I dont believe Texas is bad but you may want to just check up on whichever brand cat your getting and see how well they manage.

I was going to mention the notorious valve cover leak, but you already mentioned that you have replaced the spark plugs. How long ago?

Are you using royal purple fluids??? Especially if you use them in the tranny and diff, they smell when they're warm....I don't have it in my g35 but I put it in my is300 and could smell it from time to time.

i have same issues but only noticed it now that its nice out agian...i never noticed it last season
also i have an 04...(i know you-05ers-had oil consumtion issues also but to my knowledge the 04 is symptom free)

i know mine smells like oil or maybe even coolant?? i know it cant be gas btu yes it smells like oil, tranny fluid, or coolant.

keep me posted.im hoping it is oil since i recently got an oil change and i know there was a touch too much oil in there so maybe its burning off due to sprited driving?...

thanks let us know!

my guess is a valve cover leak and you are smelling burning oil. They are notorious for leaking with higher mileage.
