Problem with 6-Manual

Is it that hard to drive with 6 spd manuals? I am a daily driver and don't know how to drive with manual but is it only for racing? I know it is fun to drive with manual so i was just wondering if it is pain in the *** for daily drivers

I'm not trying to be mean or anything but I just reccomend you stick with the automatic. I base this on a few of your last posts.

Re: Problem with 6-Manual

get a beat up accord and practice on it....
G (Manual) is a very unforgiving car if you dont know how to drive stick....

Re: Problem with 6-Manual

Sorry I'm a little confused about your comments Loren04Coupe. You say there are only 2 reasons why people buy autos: they don't like to drive or they don't know how to drive. You are implicitly referring to not liking or not knowing how to drive a MT right? Because they way you said it made it sound a bit offensive to those with the 5AT, well at least to me.

Re: Problem with 6-Manual

BombRush: This may be long but read this.

Take it from me bro. I was in your EXACT situation one month ago today. I was looking to buy a G35 but which, 5AT or 6MT?

I only had one car prior to my G. It was a 1993 Acura Vigor with a 4AT. I never learned to drive stick... ever.

I learned to drive stick a *1 WEEK* before buying my 6MT. And as everyone probably would have guessed, it was STALL-A-THON when i got the G. On the driveway, reversing, releasing the clutch (duh, huh, what? going on in my mind), at stop lights, at stop signs, in traffic on the 101, 5, 405... u get the point.

I learned on a 2002 VW Jetta Wolfsberg. It had a stock turbo in it but nothing like a G. The 6MT is very unforgiving BombRush. I've had the car for 3 weeks and i still miss the timing sometimes on the gears. (Especially if the AC is on)

Traffic issues. I commute 50 miles to and from work. That's a 100 total per day. 3 weeks of ownership and 2550 miles. I freaking love every minute of it. Oh by the way, if you think my commute is open road, think again. I live in LA.

BombRush. Take it from me. A guy that's never learned stick prior to getting his G. Get a 6MT. Get it NOW!!! Don't let it scare you. Everyone's gotta learn. Even seasoned MT drivers stall the car and take a couple weeks to get used to it.

BOMBRUSH: Now it's just your turn bro.
1. Get a few lessons from a friend and their MT car.
2. Buy a G35coupe with 6MT
3. Slap it into first gear and step on the gas.
4. Feel your soul smile.

Re: Problem with 6-Manual

this reminds me, i had a dream that there was a 6mt g35 with an option to drive auto. not a 5AT with tiptronic, but an actual manual with an automatic option. it was GREAT.

sorry to mislead the thread.

but otherwise, 6mt is GREAT. i drove different manuals b4, but never owned one. then decided to get the 6mt, and somehow, it was completely different. i love it tho.

Re: Problem with 6-Manual

My situation was exactly the same as JKDMan. I really wanted the coupe, but didn't know how to drive manual. So basicly I was faced with the same decision you have. I learned how to drive stick on a beater Toyota 2 weeks before I picked up my coupe. Like others have mentioned, the G35C manual is not very forgiving and is more difficult than other manual cars I have tried. (BMW330, Miata, Acura TL, Porsche 911...)

I have been driving the 6MT G35C for a year and half now, my recommendation is 6MT. Borrow a manual car and learn, or rent one if you have to. You can't really make a decision if you don't even know how to drive a manual. It's much more rewarding driving a manual car than automatic, especially on a sport GT like the G35C.

Then again, if you are 50 already and don't want to deal with the traffic and chronic muscle pain..... get the auto.

Oh yeah, don't forget those Brembos~ There are those who claim the stock brakes are just as good as Brembos.... take them to track for a couple of laps and we'll see what happens. (actually just ask Riffster )

Re: Problem with 6-Manual

I learned how to drive stick at the dealership.. I asked them if we could take out a different car because I didn't want to learn on the one I was taking home. So we took out a brand new Coupe with only 2 miles on it and I learned to drive on that car... Sorry to anyone who bought that car after me =P

Re: Problem with 6-Manual

Don't sweat it. Just learn how to drive stick with a crappy car. Stick is fun to drive, just one week in the G 6mt and you will never ever go back to At again.

Re: Problem with 6-Manual

i drove my friend's bmw m3 a few times before getting my coupe. right after he got it i tyred driving it and stalled twice without moving more than 6 inches total and he was like "THIS LESSON IS DONE!" then one time in my neighborhood he pulled over and made me give it another go because he knew i was discouraged by my first attempt. I stalled twice and got it moving 4 times from a stop. After i was out of 1st in his car tho it was really easy to drive and smooth and u couldnt really feel the shifts (i was letting of right before shifting and then letting it engage before touching the gas again). Then the next time i drove it i reversed and then drove around a neighborhood a little and he said that i was really getting good (this time i was pretty good) so i decided to tell my dad tha ti wanted to go to the dealership and test drive a 6mt coupe (i had tryed the AT but planned on MT all along). I got it out of the dealership in 1st gear no problem but after that O MAN. haha i beat up on that car pretty bad and found it easier to get moving and in first gear than my friend's m3, but it was a lot more difficult and unfogiving to drive after that. I'm glad i got an MT and will probably never drive another car in an AT. I also have friends with cars in MT that ehy wish they had gotten auto on tho. I have a lot of fun jumping in my car and banging the gears around. I have driven in heavy traffic and its not relaly that bad. The MT keeps u more focused on driving also than an AT would and probably makes you a better all around driver, not just one who acn drive stick. MY dad didnt want to buy me a manual at first because i couldnt drive it that well (had my friend drive home from the dealership for me), but i convinced my dad by saying that it maeks you pay more attention to the road (and its tru). I also feel so dumb in AT cars now and dont feel like i have nearly as much control over it. (i find myself looking to downshift instead of hitting my brakes when slowing down)

i think MT > AT.... but some people just get tired of it after a while

Re: Problem with 6-Manual

Here's the deal, do you want to steer a car or drive a car? Not trying to sway you anyway or take anything away from the AT guys. Basically, the MT, once you master it, will provide you with numerous ways to control the car. AT's will let you turn, accelerate and break to control, but the MT's allow you more precise control over the engine speed. Having said this, I agree with what others have reco'd.....find a beater to practice on. If you are worried about not being able to figure it out, just think of this. If you have no other way to get from point A to point B, and your only way is via a MT car, guess what, you WILL pick it up very fast!! Now, if you have an AT car and a MT, you may never pick it up b/c you will have the AT car to fall back on!!! When it comes down to it, it's your choice. I would try to find someone with a MT G and a AT G, have them take you for some aggressive rides and you can decide for yourself. Driving stick isn't that hard and isn't just for racing. If that's what you're worried about, get the stick. If you are worried about driving in traffic for a few hours day or you frequently multitask while driving, that's a different story.

Re: Problem with 6-Manual

I actually think the stick on the G is fairly easy to use. With 3.5 liters, the chance of stalling is minimized. I learned to drive a stick on a '89 CRX SI with a 1.6 liter engine putting out around 90 lb/ft of torque. That car would stall if you didn't hit the gas at the right time. With the G, you can almost let the clutch out (slowly) and not have it stall. It shouldn't take you more than a week or two to get it down well enough to enjoy it.
