Dont Buy Cheap Tires...

Well... it finally happened when I though I could go the cheap route which ended up causing me more problems... As some of you might have read my other post about "New Tires - ABS Problems" I recently bought a new set of tires for the G. Each tire was stamped correctly, 225/45R18 and 245/45R18. After I got the new tires, my ABS was activating at every stop as if I were on ice. I took the car to the dealership to have the ECU flashed, except mine didnt need an update. They then proceeded to check all my wheel sensors, which were fine. They took my car on a road test and hooked up a unit to measure the speed of my wheels, when they found that my front wheels were spinning 3km/h faster than my rear wheels. We then measured the diameter of my rear tires compared to one on the lot, and wouldn't you know it, my rear is more like a 245/50 rather than a 245/45. I guess this is what happens when you buy cheap tires that arent manufactured to spec.

I have to get new tires today :S.

My 08 sedan with sport wheel package has 225/50R18's on the front, not the 45 aspect ratio you mentioned. It does have the 245/45R18's on the back. Could that difference in aspect ratio account for the difference in wheel speed you encountered?

a LOT of tire places are now selling cheap tires and claim that the tire company is owned by a big name tire company. "oh, these Wanak tires are really Goodyear's with a different name".... yaaaaa righhhht.

DON'T DO IT.

Sorry you had to learn the hard way.

For the record, the inexpensive tires that have got HUGELY GOOD reviews by many Corvette, Porsche, and Nissan/Infiniti guys..
1. Kumo Ecsta
2. General UHP
3. Sumitomo
4. BFGoodrich KDW2

Also, you NEED to check the date code on the tires. Old tires become hard. Some places like Discount tire will sell you tires that have been on a shelf for 2 or 3 years.

For those reading this thread and don't know how to read tire age, it is on the side of the tire in the form XXYY where XX is the week number the tire was produced and YY is the year. For example, on this tire shown below, the tires are 2607... tires was made in the 26th week of 2007.

BFGs are not cheap tires at all.

One of the best cheap tires that are pretty amazing are the Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta

Haha Ya i had T1Rs when I had my rims, but I sold those last week.

These cheapos were some Hercules tires, a 'sub brand' of Goodyear.

I am going to replace them with the new Hankook summer performance tires.

The stock 04 is 225/45 and 245/45. Maybe the new ones are running the 225/50 but i going to try the stock fitment first.

price BFG's next to Michelin PS2. They come up in the "cheap" category.

Do you have them? how many miles and what kind of driving do you do? How's the wear on them?

I did a quick search on the vette forum. Here's a little blurb one guy wrote up when he got a set
Vred - report :

First off, the tires are marked "280" treadwear and not "320" as advertised.....but that's fine by me.

#1 - Road noise : Hard to tell because my fronts are too noisy - still got the Toyo Proxies on the front with 50% tread left. From what I can tell there's very little noise other than a faint 'howl' around corners at speeds above 45mph.

#2 - Grip : EXCELLENT.....they slide less than the Toyos and have a good bite to them. Light rain today and they accelerate well when wet too

#3 - Feel : In corners, I can really push the car with almost no traction loss.....in short - they feel 'solid'. Still have yet to do a heavy acceleration test......but so far there's no wheel-hop or bounce with great road tracking.

#4 - Design : Looks are awesome and the sidewalls bulge slightly providing the illusion of a lower profile tire than the Toyos. Very meaty tread and looks like it'll give me a few more miles for the $.

So far I'm very pleased...... .....Awesome......
and here's a little discussion on the C4 vette board (C4 vettes are about the same performance level as a G35/350Z)

I have heard and read lots of good things on these tires. Too bad they are so hard to find. Anyone had any luck finding them? I found one place so far - performanceplustire.com

Sorry, not trying to jack your thread.

I bought cheap tires for my car... Falken FK452's, and I like them a lot. They ride real smooth, seem to be wearing a lot better than my OEM Michilin Pilotsports and cost about half as much as the Michilins. The only bad thing about them is that they don't have that rim-protecting band around the edge of the tire, so it's easier to curb your rims with these tires if you're not careful about parallel parking in the city in comparison to the Pilotsports.

I think I paid like $585 shipped for my set of 245/45/18 rear's and 245/40/18 front Falken FK452 tires for my car from DiscountTireDirect.

I know several guys who run these same tires on their Corvettes and they also like them.

Well, I got new tires, and I still have an abs problem. So this is going to cost me alot more, although the computer says my sensors are ok, chances are its probably a bad sensor.
