Knowledgable G owners please!!
Knowledgable G owners please!!
So im 19 years old, and im looking to get rid of my 08 silverado for a G. I have liked them for a really long time, and finally convinced my dad to let me trade in my truck
But, when my gpa found out, and found out the car i wanted, he started looking things up and now is complaining that the tires are wearing down hella fast, and they cost '500' a piece. That the gas mileage will be worse than my truck, that people have lots of problems with their brakes, and theres alot of rattling complaints, etc.
Now i researched a little and I think I came to some facts.
1. That alot of the tire issues IMO, seem to have been from the people with the 19'' rims. Since it is an odd size?
2. the gas mileage CAN be good, if you dont have a heavy right foot.
3. Didnt really find anything out about the brake issue so ill let you guys inform me.
Also i have a question, I cant really find the G that i want,( color scheme/with interior color). And if i do find one, its lower 20's price range. Which is more than im looking for, so i found an 05 pearl white, with tan interior and 60xxx miles for roughly 15,500.
Sounds like a pretty good deal right? Well my only problem is that i want the black leather interior, so my question is this.. assuming i bought the car and had the extra money to throw around, how much would it cost to get the interior changed to black? Seats, dash, console, etc.
Heres 2 that im looking at ATM: http://dallas.craigslist.org/ndf/ctd/1377999797.html

Thanks for all the help in advance!!!

Hey man, Im 19 years old also and have had my G for about 2 years; your going
to love it for sure..
1. The tire issues are not that bad, and yes it does get worse with some aftermarket
rims, or if you get the correct offset, can improve the tire wear. And NOOOO they are
not $500 a piece. You can buy $80 tires if you really want to, although i dont advise it lol
2. Gas mileage is not that great, but like you said, don't drive like an as$hole and it's
really not that bad. I drive mostly city and some highway and i think I average around
20 miles to the gallon. Not good, but not horrible.. Probly better then your truck lol
3. Brakes don't wear bad, but it depends if you get the Brembo brakes..
Ivory Pearl with black Int. is extremely rare, so I wouldnt push your luck on that one. If
you wanted to make the interior black yoursefl, and look good, it would cost a pretty
good amount. Hey, ive got Pearl with Tan and i love it!.. Good luck tho

ILLfiniti you're better off finding an '04 with low mileage (40K miles) then you won't have Revup issues, IP Coupes came with charcoal interior that year. Tire size has very little to do with how they wear, larger tires like 19"/20" just cost considerably more. Brakes aren't an issue, the poor quality OEM pads are....simple fix is Hawk HP pads. Any time you have a question about the G35 just use our SEARCH all the answers can be found there. Hope you find the G35 you're looking for, Good Luck!

My G has the 17" stock wheels, and tires are pretty reasonable. I get about 22-23 MPG, and have had zero problems (so far) with excessive brake wear. My car doesn't rattle that bad. The only rattling noise my car has had was the lever on the passenger seat that allows the seat to recline, and it was only every once in a while. What you have mentioned may be the most noted issues about the G35, but I haven't found mine to be worse in any of these areas than any of my other cars (and BOY have I had a bunch of cars...) - These are just the gripes that we come up with, definately not deal-breakers when thinking about buying one. The only notable issue is the oil consumption issue that some people have had. I haven't experienced it, but I think it is for certain years... do a search for it. Also, many of us have had the Bose head unit crap out. Not a huge deal, but you have to buy a fairly expensive dash kit which includes climate control in order to replace it, so replacing the stereo is considerably more expensive in a G35 than most other cars. Bottom line: These are the nicest used cars you can find for the money right now PERIOD.
Another thing to consider if you haven't looked into it already is the cost to insure the vehicle. My guess is it's going to be quite a bit more than your silverado (but idk maybe your parents are covering that). Overall this vehicle is going to be significantly more expensive to maintain on a daily basis than your truck...gas is more, maintanence costs are more, especially if you're buying a higher milage vehicle to save $$.
I'd probably avoid the one with blacked out rims. It shows that whoever had it before was into modding it (not that we all don't mod our cars, but personally if I'm buying something used out of warranty I want to know it's been driven by someone too scared to touch anything outside of a dealership).
Bottom line is these cars are a great value right now and I have loved mine since the day I've got it. I'd hold out and find the car with the color combo you're looking for...you'll be happier in the long run that way. In the long term if things start going wrong you'll be paying more to fix them versus your truck, but that's all just a crapshoot.

Any 05+ manual could have issues with oil consumption (prob ~1-2% owners actually experience this problem) and then you'd be looking at the cost of an engine replacement if out of warranty. All automatics are free of this problem (non-rev-up engines). If looking used, I'd go for the '05 or above cuz they refreshed the interior a bit, but obviously you'll be paying more the newer you get.
1. Rear tires defiantly don't last long. Expect replacing around every 15k miles or so
2. I don't know how some of the guys get such horrible gas mileage. You can't possible drive with your foot to the floor everywhere. I had my car 18 months and put 30k miles on it and never got worse than 25 mpg. Thats a mixture hwy and city and occasionally getting on it. I keep track of every fill up. If you drive it normal and stay on top of maintaince you should get pretty good gas mileage.
3. If you have the Brembos the pads seem to wear out fairly quickly.
But also i've said this to young guys before and that is why not wait till you can afford the car yourself? It seems like our youth is depending more and more on there parents. Eventually you have to be independent so why not start now??? Get something YOU can afford or something that YOU can finance. Mom and dad won't be there forever. Eventually you have to let go of the tit....

If you're getting an auto, you're not going to run into many issues. Most of them (Brake pad wear, Oil consumption) is limited to 6MT's. Just make sure you take the G to a good alignment shop and you'll be fine with the tires, just remember that they are going to wear faster than your trucks. High-performance tires with a good amount of hp = tires lose tread faster. The main issue most people have is they don't have a proper alignment, and then the inside of the tire wears wayyy too fast and destroys the tire.

Your money, your car... buy whatever you want.
To answer your question, tires do wear out quick (15 to 20k) to replace. But if you shop around you can always find deals for around/under $200.
Also, look for something with less mileage, under 50k at min. Just be patient.
FYI - I have my G a little over 2 years and I average 21mpg with a mixed of city & hwy driving.

1) Hi-perf tires wear out much faster no matter what kind of sports car you drive (~15k miles). That being said, you can find longer wearing tires for the car (like all-seasons) but you will sacrifice some handling at the limit.
2) I've had my '04 6MT for 5 years now, and from day 1 have never seen better than 17mpg in the city/suburbs. This is with 100% backroad/stoplight driving, but I've found that light-footed vs. heavy-footed driving has made very little difference (maybe .5 mpg). I track pretty much every fill up using the {miles on odometer} / {gallons filled at pump} method and I consistently get 15.5-17mpg, depending on the season (typically higher in summer). I've gotten in the 23 mpg range on a few 90% highway trips. It could have something to do with the fact that I heel-toe rev-match my downshifts, but I'm not sure. No V6 manny tranny that I've ever owned has gotten better than 17mpg city.
3) My Brembo brake pads lasted about 17k for the fronts (though I probably could have eked another 1-2k out of them) and about 27k for the rears (though I might have been able to go another 1k). Other than that, my brakes have been trouble and noise free and work extremely well.

But you said in your 1st post that you finally convinced your dad to LET you trade in your truck so obviously he's helping you somehow. At 19 my dad wasn't telling me what I can and cannot buy because I was paying for my own stuff.
My vehicle is in his name because insurance is cheaper
