Sunroof and G coupe weight?
Sunroof and G coupe weight?
Does anyone know how much more the car will weigh with the sunroof (or Premium Package) versus without? I don’t think they need to do any extra structural reinforcing because of the hole in ceiling (like with convertibles), do they? But I know there are extra panels, motors, and other components because of it. Is the weight difference anything to be concerned about? If it’s not obvious already, I like lighter cars like the S2000.
Speaking of weight, are there any advantages to a heavier car like the G? I’m guessing in general that the quality of the ride may be better, maybe less jittery. And maybe better traction in bad weather? I don’t know, what do you guys think? Stability at high speeds? All the Grand Touring cars seem to be heavier…I wonder if that’s by design and not just because of the additional luxury features.

sound deadening adds weight.
I haven't gone THAT fast in this car, but ~105-110 mph, and I felt in very very much control. Definately comfortable at those increased speeds.
But you definately do notice the heaviness when trying to get aggresive.. Personally I'd take this car over most lighter cars anyday, but that's just me.

Re: Sunroof and G coupe weight?
From the road tests I have seen, the sunroof adds about 60 lbs. Other cars are even worse. The dual panorama sunroof in minis adds 100 lbs. 100 lbs isn't going to make much of a difference. It is going to take a lot more than that and some major tuning changes. You aren't going to get a Coupe to be as nimble as an S2000. It is a lot larger. It needs more room to manuver. It is a touring car, while the S2000 is a sports car. Despite have 2 less seats, the Z has the same disadvantages in handling being a lot larger. From being a former Miata owner, the S2000 at 500 lbs over the Miata is almost a slow turning bloated pig by comparison. This is also the reason why it doesn't always go faster than Miatas at SCCA Nationals.
By vehicle dynamics, a wider track and a longer wheelbase add to stability. The longer the wheelbase the more stable the car at peak cornering. The back end rotates a lot slower in the G35 and it a lot easier to drive and correct. Large road courses with shallow corners is where they work best with plenty of room to load the suspenion in the corners. Small wheelbase cars like Miatas and S2000s will snap around quickly in tight transitions. Watch a couple auto-Xs and you can easily see it.
All touring cars are alwasy heavier. They are much larger. A touring car is known for tightness and strength which adds considerable weight. If you want light and nimble, get a sports car and not a touring car.

Yeah, 120 mph doesn't phase this car at all. Feels like 65. Wonderful! Kicks VW's Fahr-fur-nughen in the pants.

Re: Sunroof and G coupe weight?
Thanks Loren and everyone, good information! I would think 60 lbs probably makes a difference to someone trying to tweak every last bit of performance out of their car, but probably not to the average street driver. Hmm, but it does give me pause (waiting for the 2005 G to customize options). I remember the marketing for the RX-7 where they said something to the effect of "engineers would kill for a hundred pounds" in reference to all their efforts to lighten up the car.
I got to drive the Autobahn this year, and I took an A4 wagon to a 127 mph (it was slick in the winter) and I had to admit, there was something very comforting and nice and different about driving a heavy car....definitely felt different from my Integra which at 2650 lbs communicates every nuace of the road surface and can get a little tiresome on long trips.

Re: Sunroof and G coupe weight?
"Weight is the enemy"
I don't know who coined the phrase but it's very true. Out of the 15 years of C&D and R&T subscriptions I have, I remember reading an article where someone was drilling holes into a suspension piece IIRC to reduce weight by a couple of oz. a hole. Regardless of how well the suspension, wheels, tires, etc., are set up, they can't overcome the laws of physics.
How much a car weighs as well as where the weight is is very important. In this case, 60 lbs. may not seem to be too much but it's location also hurts the cars performance. Having the weight at the very top of the car lifts the entire car's center of gravity. This will affect most, if not all, performance aspects of the car.

Re: Sunroof and G coupe weight?
Every bit of weight helps. Even drilled rotors with the very small weight loss will help since it's rotational mass. If your car is 60 pounds lighter at the top, then you'll feel a huge difference at the track. The sunroof-less G35 will roll less than the G35's with sunroof and therefore will handle better. I read on some magazines about the new Evo MR. Their roof is like 5kg's lighter than the normal Evo's and that difference alone is similar to lowering your car. Now, imagine what 60 pounds will do.

Re: Sunroof and G coupe weight?
Wow, you guys are making me go back and forth on this... Maybe I should order the car without the sunroof??? You guys are right, that the weight on top is a bad place for it. Could you imagine strapping some 60 lb weights right on your roof... that would definitely change things! Can anyone else verify the 60 lbs? Loren, how did you know it is 60 lbs? Is it listed anywhere or did you deduce that from cars with and without Sunroof / Premium Pkg? (Actually premium package also adds the extra amp/speakers and other small stuff which may also weigh something.)
