Well I now have 1250 miles on my coupe and in the last 100 miles or so I keep feeling a thump when shifting from 2nd gear to 3rd gear in manual mode. It's not a gear shifting thump, but something else that doesn't feel right.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is it normal?

I have over 15,000 miles on my car and had no experience with the 2nd to 3rd shift in manual mode...

If I drive my car at highway speed for 30 minutes or more, and come to a full stop and shift into reverse, I almost always get a "thunk" sound from the rear u joint/rear end. Its almost like the trans is over compensating and really shifts hard.....if I idle for a minute, it will not do that....just a little something I noticed since ownership of the car......

hahahaha. I said the exact same thing you did, just an hour ago to my dealer. I've complained about this other times in this forum but nobody truly answered what the hell the hump was. I have had it for the last 1000 miles. Its only in manumatic and its annoying. I will keep you informed.

I would guess that you are 'short shifting'. In other words, you're shifting too soon.
At moderate to wide open throttle, shift closer to redline(at least 5 to 6K rpm) and my guess is that your "thump" will disappear.

To prove the theory, leave the tranny in 'D' and let the TCU decide on the shift points. My guess is that they will be butter smooth.

Yeah, when I'm in D it shifts perfectly fine. It's just when I'm in manual mode shifting up from 2nd to 3rd is when I get this "problem". It's weird cause if I was shifting the same way in the other gears, this "problem" doesn't occur.
EZZ - let me know what your dealer says. I have to bring my car in next weekend for an oil change and I'm going to mention it to them.
Maybe I should just reset the ECU, that might possibly help.

gsedanman is right, I experience the "thump" at lower rpms on occasion in manumatic mode... shifting close to redline no thump. IN full auto its perfect....

 

lift the throttle slightly and the thump will not occur during part throtle acceleration.

I've noticed this thumping too, but only when i'm giving about...hmm...75% throttle and shifting under 3k. If you shift above 3k rpms, the thump isn't there. In D mode its non existent.

 

I tried getting a test drive at the dealer but could not due to the lack of technicians on a weekend. I have however complained previously and the dealer tested out everything and said that everything was normal. If our trannies break, hopefully they will increase the powertrain warranty. I'm thinking the gears are in good condition because D mode works great. Perhaps manual mode isn't too good for our cars?

Well I tried it tonight, and if I shift around 5K-6K the thump does not occur, but anything below that I feel it. In auto, I never feel it. It's tough to shift around 6K every time....if I keep doing that, I'll need to get gas every 180 miles.
I'm assuming my dealer will say everything is normal, so I'm just going to keep driving as usual, and if something breaks I'll just have the dealer replace in under warranty.
