New drive belts make horrible squealing sound

I decided it was time to replace my stock worn belts at 90k miles. I replaced them with a pair of Duralasts from Autozone. Ever since they have been squealing horribly, most of the time when the car is first started. It used to go on for a minute or so.. but now its down to about 15-25 seconds. I checked the belts and they are on there good.. less than quarter inch of play either way. Should I put some belt dressing on them? Will the sound gradually go away? Or should I fork over extra $$ for gatorbacks or OEM ones and have them installed in hopes of getting rid of this sound?

It's not the belts, it's what the belts slip into. It' the pulley, you need to get that replaced asap. That's what hapenned on my Max several months back. My mechanic swapped out the belts and that didn't fix the problem. He then swapped out the pulley and, woops problem solved. Replace it and then tell us how it runs, should run like new again.

did you say you have been squealing for 3 weeks now? They are probably crystallized by now. Buy new belts...oem or other, it doesn't really matter much here except for longevity of the belt. Make sure they are sitting on the groove and make sure they are tight! Word of advice. When you think they are tight enough....tork em a little more. The specs say 20ft lbs I believe. Go a bit more.

The belts are only 3 weeks old. How can I tighten them? How many bolts are there and where are they located?

Did you replace the belts yourself or go to a dealer? With you asking how to tighten, i assume you did not do the job yourself.
