park outside or in garage

Hey guys,

I always park in the garage when I'm at home. However, when I go to work, I usually park outside under the hot Houston sun. Where I work, people are usually careless, which result in dents and scratches. Question is would you guys park in the garage where there is a chance of getting dents or would you park outside under the 100 degree sun knowing your car will be dent free?

I would try to find an inside spot on the end. Have a buddy park on the other side. if the spots are assigned and you get a ding, you can go after the dinger.

Re: park outside or in garage

I park in a parking garage at work and there are only 12 spots that I will park in before I’ll go to the top (uncovered) floor. These spots are on an end, and are wider than most, so I feel safer.

I’ve found that between the window tint, the Heatshield sun shade, rolling my windows down as I walk out to the car and sitting on a towel, the heat usually isn’t too bad if I have to park in the sun. But in all honesty, I’d rather burn my butt than pay to get door dings removed.

Re: park outside or in garage

I guess I'm lucky...everywhere I worked there has been ample enough parking so I can park far away and either nobody parks near me, or only some people I know at work that also dont want their cars dinged park near me.

As for at home, when I bought my place the #1 first thing wouldnt even consider buying a place without one was a garage. Wouldnt leave my car out at night without it.

I park outside at work in a faaaaaar off parking spot. Dallas weather is just like Houstin, except a bit less humid. Get a window shade and window tint. The windshield shade helps a whole lot.

Re: park outside or in garage

If you can the best way to avoid dings on your door is to park diagnolly over two spots. Have the front end of your G toward one corner of the "square" and the back to the opposite back corner. I do this almost all the time and no dings. I wouldn't advise parking like this by a strictly enforced parking lot or at the very close spots.. As people could get jealous and might resort to messing up your ride.

Re: park outside or in garage

how about doing a risk analysis about the % likely hood of your car getting damaged by door dings vs % getting damaged by the elements?

Re: park outside or in garage

I park in the garage next to a pillar so there's only one person to my left as usually most people drive themselves, there's a good chance someone isn't using the passenger side. Keep in mind that sun and leather don't mix well over time.

Re: park outside or in garage

This reminds me of an article I saw a while ago. What cars to avoid parking next to. Cars like a Camero or Firebird or even another G35 coupe. Anything with big doors avoid. Minivans can be a good choice to park next to due to the sliding doors. Any other cars to avoid parking next to?

Re: park outside or in garage

I wouldn't recommend parking diagonally over 2 spots. I think people would get pissed and vandalize your car.

There are lots of spaces in a parking garage that you could park. just make sure it is on the end or next to a pillar and park biased to the side to keep the other cars far away.

I went to lunch the other day and parked in an end spot but then somebody parked next to me. I saw the person come back, it was a mom w/ 2 kids in a mid-90s Taurus. I was sweating bullets the whole time just watching her load the kids in the car. I went out and there were no dings though! Whew, I almost had a heart attack tho. **Still ding-less**
