How much junk in your trunk? (for winter snow)

Those of you who drive your Gs through the winter in colder climates, how much weight if any do you add to the trunk of your car for traction, and what do you add?

Someone suggested sand to me so I put in 200 lbs.

Nothing. I get by just fine with an empty trunk and snow tires.

oh yea, and I guess it would be helpful if people posted where they live and how much snow they tend to get.

Not much snow here
But, do not take the coupe out in it with my s-drive tires.
But, recently traded the 05 Sedan for a 08 G35X, so I'm ready this year!!!!!

I don't really add weight to the trunk. I just put on snow tires for the winter. We don't get a ton of snow here in Philly, but we get a few 3"+ storms per winter, and lots of dustings with resultant slushy roads. We do get some ice too.

I tend not to go out in anything over 4" until the streets have been plowed. I also get the car washed frequently in the winter to get rid of the road salt.

I'm in Calgary, Alberta and we get PLENTY of any condition you can imagine on an almost daily basis during the winter. 3 or 4" here would be like getting 1mph winds in the Windy City. I don't put anything in the trunk either but I'm sure it'd help. Even with the blizzaks I notice a disappointing amount of slip. 200lbs sounds like an awful lot... Frick I had trouble even cramming a computer case in there!

the more weight u put in, the less chance of you regaining control if you go into a slide. get snow tires and dont drive like a D-bag. I never understood how many people complain about snow and not being able to drive their car, blah blah blah. Ive taken the G through snow before no problem with my 20's on it. I wouldnt recommend that, but i did and it really wasnt bad. Just go easy on the throttle and you should have no problem

Thumbs up

Good point about the loss of recovery... hadn't thought of that. As for driving with slicks (what I call normal summer tires after my recent experience in a parking lot- just before I got Blizzaks)... you're more of a man than I am!

My summer tires were like banana peels in that parking lot- Even just idling out the tires wouldn't stick for anything.

Oh- and lol at the D-bag comment. No kidding either!

can someone enlighton me on the logic of the car being harder to recover from a slide?

Are you thinking that the added weight would create more momentom making you slide further?

Because at the same time the added weight would also be pushing your snow tires deeper into the snow and causing more friction..

I don't know how to quantify which of those would have the greater impact.

Not sure how you plan on pushing snow tires deeper into ice...
