How would you feel if you had to sleep out in the cold and somebody woke you up to go run around? Your car needs to warm up properly, people experience these kinds of problems with a lot of cars, not just G's

You could also be low on trans fluid...

Jersey, Georgia, NY, and SoCal people can GTFO off this thread, you don't know cold. Warming your ENGINE up has nothing to do with the viscosity of the TRANSMISSION fluid. At about 20 below I had the same problem until I had driven about 10 minutes....even if the engine was fully warmed up.

You could let your car sit running for an hour and the tranny fluid will not significantly warm up. Tranny fluid will not warm up until the transmission is actually in use.

As V35 suggested, changing to a synthetic aftermarket transmission fluid will certainly help a lot (though not completely). It's -35 here today and I only had slight difficulty engaging first and second since I've changed mine. I also don't have "the howl" anymore, and first gear doesn't sound like a bus transmission anymore.

I agree with John. I usually warm up the car to atleast have idle under 1000RPM. I usually have short trips under 10 minutes, can't justify warming the car for more than 5 minutes. And struggle with 2nd until atleast 10 minutes of driving.

But have also noticed that after it's smooth when I drive home. even if it's a few hours after parked in the cold, 2nd gear won't struggle on the way home. Overnight parking is when it affects the car most.

Maybe it's in my head more than anything, as long as it's not damaging the tranny I don't really mind.

Thanks everyone. This issue is not isolated to my car only it seems. Will have to check into changing to a higher quality tranny fluid.

lol i get that "howling wind" sound also when the car is cold but after the car warms up it goes away, but this is only in cold weather. I noticed this right away after my 30,000 service which was a change of all my fluids so I'm not sure what fluid is causing this lol. I'm thinking of changing out my tranny and dif ..... i believe i have royal purple in them....

Got the howling sound as well. seems to be a common problem for G's.

*note, I always let my car warm for atleast 2-3 minutes before even moving, then I keep rpm's under 2.5k for atleast another 2 minutes, then under 3.5k for the rest of the drive*

New problem...at cold temperatures (-20 Celcius) the clutch lets out really slowly, almost as if the fluid is much thicker....is this normal? (anything I can do to fix this)

Also, I have heard that there is some sort of a block preventing one from going into first gear when your rolling at all...any truth to this? I have had to push it somewhat hard to get into 1st on a few of occasions->is this really bad for my tranny, i've done it twice, any major damage done? (if so, what exactly am I looking at fixing?)

I also want to replace much Transmission fluid - what should I change over too?

For the clutch issue I would check or change the master/slave cylinder hydraulic fluid.

I had the exact same problem in my Jeep Wrangler AX15 Tranny. It would not go into 1st and barely go into 2nd when it was cold.
I changed the fluid out to Redline MT90 and it completely fixed it and also made my whining go away.

I am runnnig it presently in my G35 Coupe and had no issues. I would try it if I were you.

Before I ran Amsoil, I would have blip the throttle or double clutch to get in 2nd when tranny stone cold. Those days are gone. Heard Redline MT90 very good stuff as well.

HAHA....Ok, we don't know the kinda cold you have in the "Frozen North" and by the way you forgot to mention Florida. Good things can result from warming up your G regardless of where you live, summer or winter! Your trans issue can be solved by using synthetic fluid like Red Line as posted by the previous member. Temp as I'm posting 31 degrees....now that's cold!

It's actually around 22F today in Montreal. But we're having our first snowstorm of the season.

yeah i agree with "skyline gt", amsoil is more expensive but doesn't solve the 2nd gear issue, warm weather its great. I would recommend trying red line to anyone planning on swapping tranny oil.

Dang man... Whats with the anger... Cold winter getting to you? It's not like some of us werent actually giving valid info that could help others in the cold. Just cuz we live where we do now doesnt mean we didn't live elsewhere or have experience with cold start.

All those on here who are educated enough to understand that when your car is sitting there with the engine on, the tranny and other parts still are not at operating temps.

Weird.

Same problem I'm currently having. Just did the 60k, everything was perfect before hand, now the car will not shift into second at ALL when its cold, and it has a slight howling noise before it warms up. WTF. They changed the diff oil, tranny, engine, power steering... not sure if they changed the clutch slave fluid.
