The FINAL word on engine break-in approaches!!!
The FINAL word on engine break-in approaches!!!
Hopefully this will ultimately answer the question of how to break in an engine properly, at least in the area of gas milage, which should relate to engine efficiency and thus power. If my logic is wrong on this please let me know BTW..... I'm especially needing responses from drivers who FLOORED IT from the beginning!!!!
1. Identify current # of miles on your car, and how you broke it in.
2. Current MPG and speed on highway trips (relatively constant speed only). If you get different MPG with different highway speeds, please include....
Thanks!

I don't think many have floored it from the begining. Most peeps are breaking in using the 4kRPM rule and no constant speed, and no speed control, with the 'occasional' venture to 5 or 6k rpm's.
At 1000 Miles on my Coupe, I'm getting about 18-20 MPG's in the cold weather which will improve to 25-26 on the hwy in summer. Cold kills g/m on this car.
Can't tell about power-- there's lots there for me , No dyno yet
Good luck with yours----

Re: The FINAL word on engine break-in approaches!!!
Hey Doc,
I have about 3k on my 6MT Coupe now. I used the 4k RPM rule, never getting above it for about a thousand miles. At this point, I'm gonna start running it free. My MPG is around 18 on average but I have done no long mile runs. No constant speed either. I'm probably being ****, but I just want to season it slowly. That being said I think this engine runs pretty cool, so there is probably little need to be careful at all, the power has always been smooth all the way.

yeah man this engine is bulletproof, the only thing i would be worried about during break-in is the transmission, that has been Nissan's "weak spot" in the past, but seriously this engine really is bulletproof, should have no problems getting to 150K miles

The odd thing I noticed about my G is that the powerband is sooo linear. I'm used to V-tec type engines in which you feel the extra kick at higher RPM's.
With the G, its all power from 0 to redline - sweeeeet.

Turned 1500 miles this week. Drove from day one (Feb 20th) carefully for a while just because it had been years since I drove a manual tranny. Became more comfortable with shifting as weeks went by and started feeling connected to the "G" ....started winding her up into the 5600 rpm range for shifts on frequent occassions which were neck snappers....notchiness in the shifter has greatly improved and clutch is engaging sweeter.
Gas Milage: first few hundred miles 13 -16 around town....with lots of uncoordinated shifting. Have not taken extended highway trip yet. Last two fill ups calculated (manual method, actual miles divided by gallons) 18 -19 around town. No babying.
Folks do this after breakin period. I am. Start a spread sheet, date, gallons taken on to top off, miles travelled, cost per gallon and miles per gallon. This gives a good history and you can graph the trend and eliminate a lot of guess work on driving style...coulda, woulda shoulda......
As far as our engine is concerned VQ35DE, I lived with my 96 Maxima VQ30DE...for seven years, it's gas milage was unbelievabley great 30 + on highway.....at 60,000 miles. You can't Kill the VQ...she's a high rever...just keep that oil and filter changed. It can only get better. It's comforting to know that our engines have true metal timing chains, not those crappy rubber / synthetic timing belts....rev em up!!! with impunity.
