Car theft/joyride nightmare!!
Re: Car theft/joyride nightmare!!
Raznips, the first thing that stands out to me about this whole thing is YOUR maturity. Everyone's first reaction would have been to beat the living [crap] out of this kid and few would have had the maturity to hold back and attempt to look at this objectively. You probably saved yourself some trouble there.
The next thing that comes to mind is that this other kid needs to be taught a lesson - obviously he's not being taught properly at home. If he were my kid I'd hang his dumbass out to dry and would have probably have called the cops AFTER kicking his *** myself for being such a dumbsh!t. Stealing a car belonging to someone you don't know isn't normal behaviour so I'm sure this kid has probably been in trouble before and most likely his parents have stood up/covered for him before. In my opinion they ALL need to be taught a lesson.
What you should do is print out this thread and let his parents read it so they can decide how best to proceed to make this right. I'd probably also let my so-called "friends" read it too just so that they can see how shallow they appear too (seriously, blaming you for telling your parents? Give me a break!). Any real friends would back you up in this difficult decision. It wasn't easy to restrain yourself and NOT kick this kids *** but his (potentially) mis-guided parents would probably have had you arrested had you done so.
Letting your trusted best friend drive is reasonable to me - I'd let me best friend (with an M3) drive my car too. He had the keys in his pocket - still ok there. Having the keys taken out of his pocket by an unknown dude - that's outside of your control and shouldn't be a direct "result" of you letting your friend drive it. If he'd had his M3 that night they'd probably had been joyriding that instead.
When it comes to damage control in this situation I'm of the opinion that you make him/his parents go through the hassle and expense of buying you a new rim and bring it to you - not a used one, a new one with a receipt. For the possible wear-n-tear on the clutch ask them what they think is fair compensation for this stupidity. Maybe they will agree with some of the other posters on this thread and agree to a long-term warranty or maybe a less-expensive-than-oem after-market clutch. Like I said, print out this thread and let them decide. If what they propose is unacceptable, call the cops and report the incident and then take them to court. Small claims actions are pretty easy to file and the judge would most likely throw the book at them.

Re: Car theft/joyride nightmare!!
Similar things have happened to me when I was your age and believe me at that time they hurt. If someone stole my car or used it without permission I would still be furious. The situation appears to not have been your fault. I don't know how your parents feel, maybe they told you not to let ANYONE drive your car, and that's their perogative if they said so. As a previous poster said, print out this thread, have your parents read it and let them decide how this should be handled. I think, basically, everything will work out alright with your car. Just get them to pay for any damages to your wheel (new wheel is best idea) and some other money for possible wear and tear on your clutch (you might ask Infiniti what might be fair).
Now, you basically did the right thing by NOT beating his ***. He deserves it for sure, but violence never solves anything (that's why the world is so messed up today!)
That kid is worse than a jerk, he has some SERIOUS problems and so do his parents. Don't worry, he'll get his eventually if he doesn't straighten up.
Your so called friends are not your friends (they're selfish brats). As you said, friends come and go; in a few years you'll never even miss them or think about them. If you value the friendship of your best friend and have faith and trust that he is a true friend, keep him and forget about the others.
As some people said, this could have been a VERY serious situation if that kid had gotten into an accident or even if he had been stopped by the police while he was driving. He's getting off easy no matter how you think of it.

Re: Car theft/joyride nightmare!!
I see your point but , This all could have been avoided if you didint give the keys to your car to some one else. Besides the curb rash i dont see how 35 miles did anything to your brakes or tires or clutch i have had many stick cars and it takes a lot more then that. get a new rim out of it if you can . And you also got a good lesson out of it , you we not responable and it could have been a lot worse next time keep your keys close. i have had some bad luck with other people and my cars but now i have learned no one drives but me and i dont give my reall address no matter what , i also got a lesson about leaving my wheel lock in my truck to the tune of $5K. just think it could have been worse

The kid's dad just called and offered ~$220 because he looked into the cost of renting a porcshe boxter for a day.
<hr></blockquote>Minimally, $220 plus the cost of repairing the damaged rim. If you rented a Boxter and damaged it you would be liable.

Re: Car theft/joyride nightmare!!
im thinking that i will probably be asking for the cost of a replacement rim and the 220 for the wear and tear on the car. That seems resonable because i think of it this way. My friend's dad drives an m5 (i realize that i dont have QUITE an m5 but bear with me here) and he drove his car like a maniac for the first 5k miles when he had the car. He dropped the clutch in it about 20 tiems and chirped a bunch of gears and stuff. By the 5,000 mile mark he needed a clutch and tires. I realize that i dont have 400hp or whatever the m5 has but my clutch probably isnt as heavy duty as that one either so im thinking the kid probably put about 1/20th or so of the total wear my clutch will take on it. MY tires.... well i have spun them before when its been wet out before and i enjoy a little drift session every once in a while with my friends with 240's and such so i cant really get to mad about the few miles he took off the life of my tires (im saving for volks right now anyways and probably will sell the wheels with tires before the tread is through anyways). i believe that a new wheel is around 800 or so, so im probably looking at getting ~$1000 for this. His parents are really eager to right me a check and be done with this since they want it all to go away. I really kind of feel bad making his parents pay me for this because from what i know about the family they are good people and try really hard with this kid. He has been grounded before for months (i think 6) for something minor before like going to a party and drinking without permission to be there before..... something that my parents would probably take my car away for for a week just for lieing to them.... if i didnt know that they are harssh and severe with their punishments i would never have called them in the first place. I know that parents can punish kids 10x worse than the law at the age of 16 and i know these parents will. Another thing that i know is that the kid will be paying his parents back for this after they initially write the check out of their pockets. They told me this and are also the kind of parents taht i can really see doing this. I am in trouble with my parents no way around that. Thats why i feel that what i did was a mature way of handling this because i knew i was going to be in trouble but still felt that i had to tell my parents because i was trying to be a man about it and fess up to what happened and the parts that my parents may feel are my fault. My mom was pretty understanding after i told her that i could have just as easily gotten the keys taken out of my pocket or if i had left them on the counter that doesnt really give someone a freebee for taking out my car or something. My parents dont care that my friend drives my car. Like i think i said in an earlier post he drove it home for me (after i drove it the 20 yards or so off the showroom floor haha) because i didnt feel comfortable in 5 o clock traffic on the freeway in the new car. (g35 and m3 are totally different feeling and at the time i drove the m3 a lot better than the g) Well i really dont want a repair on my wheel just in case it doenst turn out looking how i want it to, and i just think im going to get a quote from infiniti in writing as to how much one costs and then just add about 200 for that and bring it to them and say this is the minimum i am expecting. They know that i am the only thing stopping my parents from pressing charges currently and i am positive that in court i could get a lot more than 1000 and it would probably cost them upwards of 20k with lawyers fees and fines and such.... so they should feel lucky that i feel like being a human being about this and not just trying to ruin the kids life and get the most money possible out of this. I am trying to come up wiht a resonable figure.... $220 is definatly not what i had in mind with the damaged rim..... so im going to talk to them.

Re: Car theft/joyride nightmare!!
You've been very mature about this whole situation. It looks as if you're finding out how much you can count on your so called friends(not the M3 friend). All they care about is themselves not getting in trouble, you car be trashed. And don't underestimate the immaturity of the other players in the show-I would make sure my G wasn't parked off somewhere where it could be keyed or vandalized easily. Good luck.
Re: Car theft/joyride nightmare!!
talked to infiniti today and the guy seemed pretty bent on me getting a new clutch installed and the new wheel. He said pretty much that one of those clutches is built to last about 100k miles with normal use and that things like what that kid did could make that into a 10k mile clutch. He was pretty adimate about the fact that it is a car with less than 3700 miles on it (he knew that i was getting my oil changed). He seemed to think i should be looking at getting some more money than 200 for the wear and tear, and that i should get a master tech to drive the car and see what he thinks. I'm sure that my car is really just fine and he's gonna think so too.... so i dunno whats gonna happen... i'll keep u guys updated when i get the word from infiniti on tuesday next week
