The G Has Dissapointed Me...
The G Has Dissapointed Me...
I was @ the track last night. I went to the Las Vegas Speedway. Temperature was low 90's and humidity was 70. I have a 5at. Let me start off by saying my G is freakin' slow. Here are my times:
1st run against a mustang GT (which raped me)
r/t 1.375 sec. (very bad i know)
60' 2.443 sec.
1/4 mi. 15.552 sec. @ 91.56 mph
2nd run
r/t 1.226 sec.
60' 2.512 sec.
1/4 mi. 15.826 sec. @ 90.32 mph
3rd run vs a 6mt Z (I won
)
r/t. .732 sec.
60' 2.444 sec.
1/4 mi. 15.570 @ 91.61
Observations/Info
I also had another run, but i lost the slip. Anyways, I found that using MM, i got better times than using D. I torque braked @ 2200 rpm or somewhere in that ball park every run. VDC off. My friend with the 6mt Z was running very shi*y times too. He was running mid 15's as well. I know I am supposed to be running at least high 14's. My idle rpm's were at like 300 or so. Is there something I could be doing wrong? Any suggesstions? Somethin wrong with my G?It really disappointed me. I thought i was at the most going to run 15.0 sec. I especially thought my run against the Z would be awesome because I got such an awesome launch (.732 reaction time), but that proved to suck. So i dont know what to think?

Re: The G Has Dissapointed Me...
Reaction time is not figured into your 1/4 mile time. At least part of what is making your runs slow is the 60' times (which do not start until your front tires trip the track timer).
Altitude, weather, and track conditions have a huge effect. If temperature was 90 and humidity was 70 (WOW that's humid for LV, isn't it!?) then that would explain part of it. Were you having traction troubles during your launch?
Also, the weight of your chrome wheels probably has an effect as well.

Re: The G Has Dissapointed Me...
I wouldnt be too worried. Your reaction time was not the best and you probably need to accomodate for climate. I was hitting 14.7's in my 5AT stock.

Man, you went to the track last night? You should have let me know I would have loved to have gone and checked it out. I haven't been yet. Humidity and temperature can affect a N/A engine dramatically.

This is also a good article even though it is about boats:

In last nights conditions you were probably down about 8hp from stock. I'm curious, what times did the 350z run?

Re: The G Has Dissapointed Me...
I too went to the drag races last night in Phoenix, AZ (Firebird Int'l. Raceway). The temperature was about 101 degrees at 7:00 PM. I was able to make four consecutive runs, which were all very consistent. I have a completely stock 03 sedan with a six speed. Here is my best result:
r/t 0.434 seconds
60' 2.236 seconds
1/4 mile 15.229 seconds @ 92.25 MPH
I have done a lot of drag racing over the years (mostly motorcycles but some cars). As far as Phoenix goes, it is about 1,250 feet above sea level, which means we will be four to five tenths of a second slower, as compared to sea level. The high ambient air temperature is also a negative factor.
As stated earlier, reaction time has nothing to do with your ET. The light can turn green and as long as you don't move, you can sit there for 20 seconds, launch the vehicle and run a 15.5 with a 20 second reaction time. Reaction time is only critical when racing heads up or bracket racing. Your 60' foot time however, is a very important factor in running the best possible ET's.
Please keep a couple of things in perspective. Rarely are we going to be as fast as the magazine tests. When comparing times with other people from around the country, you do not have a comparison as to track conditions, weather conditions, altitude, or engine mods. Heck, you don't even know for certain they're being truthful about their ET's.
The only things I would be concerned about is the fact that the Mustang GT raped you!
Please keep one other thing in mind. Your MPH is a key indicator of horsepower. You now have a good baseline from which to measure when you do other mods.

Re: The G Has Dissapointed Me...
Track altitude, temperature, and humidity can really affect your times. I wasn't happy with my 15.1's in Tucson until I saw an M3 run a 14.5. Even the stock LS1's and STi's were in the 14's. The good news is there is definetely room for improvement judging by your 60' times. A decent approximation is every .1 off your 60' is .2 quicker in the quarter. If you can get your 60' to 2.2 or so it should put you in the 14's.

Re: The G Has Dissapointed Me...
What do you expect 5AT? when using automatic, 25% (or less) loss of the power to the AT and that is why it is slow as compare to 6MT loss 16% (or less) power.

Re: The G Has Dissapointed Me...
I purchased my G the beginning of this summer when the daytime temps. were in the mid 90's. Receintly the temps. have been much cooler, low 60's in the mornings. There is a night and day difference in power. The car really wakes up. Judging from the fact that you beat the Z, same engine different car, I would say it's the temp.
I think my G is more affected by temp. than previous cars that I have owned.
I would like to see more times from you this fall when it cools down.

FYI, From the Central FL Dyno Day we found that the paracitic losses in the 6MT coupe were right at 18% and the 5AT coupe was right at 20%. Don't know where you found those numbers???
Gasoline grade, how recently you changed your oil, tire temps, tire pressure, track preparation all effect your track times. My BEST time ever has been 14.5 at 98.XXX and that was in hot, humid Florida. I probably won't run again until closer to Christmas to try to improve upon my time.
Hope you had fun at the track!
The above statements are only my take on the issue. If you disagree with anything I typed then you are 100% right!

Re: The G Has Dissapointed Me...
the line at the track was fairly wet. that might have contributed to tire spin. I changed my oil about 3,000 miles ago. Im going in this week for an oil change. I lowered my tire pressure in the back to 31 both rear tires. Yea the temperasture was REALLY stuffy. my friend in the Z had his engine die out twice last night i think due to the heat. The mustang GT i went up against i think was fully stock. It ran like a 14.8 or something. Yea there were some sweet cars though. A brand new z06, hella corvettes, evo's, vipers, z's, wrx's. you name it, it was there. My goal is to hit 15.0 stock. I dont think 15.0 is a very unreasonable goal considering my auto G SHOULD be running like 14.7-15.0 or so?

My friend in the Z was running mid 15's the whole night. He is 6mt too. So i dunno.... His lowest was 15.3 i believe.

Re: The G Has Dissapointed Me...
Sounds like everyone was running poor times last night. It's not the cars fault or the drivers for that matter. Wet track + high temp = bad performance. That's all there is too it. Under last nights conditions if I am reading this calculator is right:
http://wahiduddin.net/calc/calc_hp_abs.htm
It would have been the same as running at 2400 ft above sea level.

Re: The G Has Dissapointed Me...
Drag cars don't need those heavy passenger seats, glass (think plastic) windows, carpet, sound deadening, electric window motor, spare tire, 6 cd changer, air conditioning, chrome rims, big front tires, sun roof, trunk lid, trunk carpet, jack, alternator hooked up.....you get the picture. If you remove all these items, I'll bet you drop 400 pounds and get down into the low 14's.
Best thing, it won't cost you a dime.
