VCD? on off?

VCD? on off?
Sorry in advance for my ignorance.
I keep reading that everyone turns off their VCD before doing a race or their quarter mile...I thought VCD only kicks in when ya doing heavy turns? I have no real technical knowledge of VCD, so again excuse my ignorance. Just wanted to know if it really helps, and if I want some extra speed, I should turn it off? Thanks in advance! =)

Re: VCD? on off?
I don't know how it is for the automatic, so I'll just speak for the manual. In a manual, you rev to 3K-4K and then drop the clutch for a "launch" in which the rear tires spin for a split second or more. Also, when you do the 1-2 shift, the tires chirp and when you do the 2-3 shift, the tires chirp. In these 3 instances (launch, 1-2 shift, and sometimes the 2-3 shift) when the tires chirp or spin, traction control kicks in and cuts off throttle for a second or two until the rear tires have full traction again. This is unacceptable in a race.

Same thing for the 5AT. It depends on how you launch, but if for example you torque brake and launch at 2000rpm and get any wheelspin at all the VDC will kick in and cut power, killing your time. Try it sometime with VDC on, then off. It's a noticable difference.
I'm assuming, by the way, that "before doing a race" means launching in a straight line. Whether or not to leave VDC on during a race on a road course is a whole other discussion.

Re: VCD? on off?
I just understand from reading the manual (I was very curious about this at one time too) that w/ VDC OFF the engine uses it's full power... and w/ VDC ON you get safety features which I am not familiar w/ at the top of my head--that's just what I got from the manual.. I could be completely off, maybe there is somebody more capable who can chime in =)

Re: VCD? on off?
VDC is a lot like any other traction/stability control program. Basically it will only kick in if your wheels start to slip (like the above posters said). It doesnt affect power of your engine unless it senses wheel spin, at which time it will cut power and pulse the brakes very quickly (it feels like shuddering). As far as traction/stability programs that are out there.....the Infinity VDC is one of the more invasive ones that Ive driven, which is probably why a lot of guys like to keep theirs off. The best that Ive driven was in a BMW which I think is a bosch system....super smooth, you dont even know its workin aside from the light.

Yeah, I think BMW has the one that's the quickest to react and doesn't really seem to interfere too much. Mercedes' system is excellent as well.
The worst traction control system I've experienced by far is in the RX300. I use that car sometimes when it's snowing and one time I was playing around in the snow. I would make a right or left turn where I knew the car would lose traction and the traction control seriously would not kick in until all four wheels completely lost traction. Once it did work, it did the job extremely well (although it felt like I lost COMPLETE control of the car and the traction control system was driving for me, completely manipulating the car using the vehicle's brakes independantly), but it is just way too late in the game. If I didn't explain that well, here's an easier way: basically, traction control systems kick in as soon as bad sh*t starts to happen. The Lexus doesn't kick in until you're fully experiencing the bad sh*t....I found it to be not very confidence-inspiring. I know you're not supposed to rely on the traction control system and EXPECT it to save your ***, but I think it should make the driver feel confident that it will help you out when the going gets tough, and the traction control system did not instill that confidence in me (and I'm only 20 so I'm still pretty stupid and ballsy).
