How soon to wax after repaint?

Here's the deal. My car is at the shop getting the bumper repaired. It is being painted tommorrow (bumper only). I am getting it Friday. From there I want to take it to get it professionally detailed/waxed. (I want a good layer of wax on there before I start applying it myself.)

Body shop says to wait 40 days to wax the bumper. Detailer says it doesn't matter with the types of paint on new cars. Should I not have the detailer wax the bumper? I really want him to because I hate rock chips, but I also don't want to damage anything.

By the way how is Mother's wax? (The detailer uses that.)

Re: How soon to wax after repaint?

Do not get the car waxed and detailed right away!!!! The paint needs a good 30 - 45 days to set. When you get your car back, you will notice paint fumes still coming from the areas they painted. If you wax it too soon, those fumes will not be able to escape and will damage the finish.

The car will be newly painted and the body shops always put on a special "breathable" wax on there which should last for a few months. Dont be too eager to get the car details when the paint is still "soft."

P.S. - wax does not prevent rock chips.

i was told that I can wax my car when I get my car back from the bodyshop. The only I need to stay away from is bird crap and sprinklers.

I believe you can POLISH it right away, but you should wait before waxing it.

Also, I'd go with what the body shop said. You know how dealers are. But, if you rdealer will sign something saying the will pay for a repaint if something goes bad, then wax away (I'm SURE they'd be willing to sign something.. lol)
Edited by jimcambell on 09/16/04 05:15 AM.

Re: How soon to wax after repaint?

Since it is not factory OEM where they cure at high temps.. I would just use a Glaze and wait 30-40 days as well. I doubt the heat they used was high enough to cure it.. but since it was just the bumper maybe they did.. I would ask the bodyshop.

Re: How soon to wax after repaint?

I would say that 30-45 days would be a safe amount of time...

When I had my rim repaired and cleared....the repair place told me not to wash or wax the area for at least 3-5 weeks, and since it was repaired in the middle of winter, I let it go a little longer......

After the waiting period, you may notice the finish dull a little. Its no big deal, use common sense, and apply a good quality polish and follow up with a top layer of wax, and your car should look like new......
