2003 G Coupe Going Completely Insane
Hi guys,Ii know i'm new but i've been browsing the site as a guest for a little while now. I wish I had pics to upload of my G so that everyone may see it but I don't. It's a 2003 Infiniti 5AT G Coupe. It's got 86000 miles as of today and unfortunately today is also the first it has given me a problem.
It started just fine this morning. I left for an appointment then came back home around noon. Then I left again. It once again started fine. Then while I tried to start it, to head back home, I would not turn over. As soon as I would put the key in the start position, it would just make a loud click. Keep in mind that I had just turned it off maybe ten minutes before. So I waited for many hours, then decided to try and start it again. I managed to start it, so I was slightly relieved. While on the way home however, all the lights throughout the interior and exterior of the car were just flashing and going dim, just plain going crazy. Then the engine started struggling to stay on and the radio started to play strange sounds through the speakers. My subwoofer also started playing strange noises. By the time I knew it, the car finally turned off and would not turn back on. All the while all the indicator, dome, and interior lights were blinking and going nuts. While I was stranded on the shoulder, It kept doing this till it finally killed the battery. I know this is probably one of the craziest things that y'all have heard this car do but can anyone please help me find out what is going on?

Get your alternator checked. The alternator is not able to charge the battery anymore and the result would be the entire car trying to stay alive from just your battery and your components will dim out and flicker.
I appreciate the advice. Thats also what the tow driver said. Oddly enough he jumped the car so that I could roll my windows back up and the car was doing just fine. The only problem it still had was that it would once again not turn over whatsoever. It just made that loud clicking sound.
Regardless, tomorrow morning I'm towing it to my local Infiniti Dealership (Gunn Infiniti), because it just seems like the most practical thing to do at this point. We'll see what's going on tomorrow I guess.

clicking sound is when there is not enough juice in the battery to turn the engine over, had the same problem with my car (clicking sound) replaced battery and i was good to go.
alternator is probably the problem however since its not charging the battery. how new/old is the battery? you may look into replacing or trickle charging your current battery to find out if that is the problem first, its much cheaper then an alternator although i don't think alternators are terrably expensive.

It sounds like your probably going to need a new alternator
or maybe its not the alternator and you just need a new battery
If you do need a new alternator, there not too expensive. Its probably going to run $200-400 for a new one.

I'm going to get the car towed pretty soon. Luckily I have a third party warranty on the car and everything is covered with zero deductible, so at least i'm prepared as far as that goes. This is the first time I've ever had to use it though.
I'm with y'all as far thinking the alternator may be the culprit. However, does anyone know how long the car would last just running off the battery? The reason I ask this is because when I managed to turn it on, I stayed there idling for at least 20 minutes before I took off. And even then it still made it another 20 minutes into the trip before it started messing up again.

Another thing to check is the alternator belt. The belt could have wear and tear on it over time and not have the same tension is used to therefore not spinning the alternator fast enough. Your car is pretty old and if the belt has never been replaced it wouldnt surprise me if that was your problem.

Check your battery terminals. Sand them down. Crimp the cables a little to insure a tighter fit. Re-install. I'm almost certain you're having issues with connectivity. Wait, was it clicking or was it a single click. If it was continued clicking than your battery is dead, recharge or buy new. A single click is connection issues.
Everything on top is what I would do first, but hey u got extended warranty. Let them take it get u a new battery or alternator and be back on your way. That's why u payed for warranty. Right. It does sound like connection issues.
