Is there any way to check for this prior to buying the car?
If not, what would happen if I found this to be a problem and the powertrain warranty is already up? Would I be SOL?
How much would a repair be anyways?

 

1) Not really. Unless the previous owner had already run an oil consumption test, in which case Infiniti would have records of it under your cars VIN. I guess you could check the dipstick and see if it was unreasonably low, but most likely they would've changed the oil prior to putting the car up for sale if they knew OC was an issue.

2) Yes you would be SOL, it'll get interesting to see what happens in the next year or so as a lot of the 05's begin dropping out of powertrain warranty.

3) There is no fix for the problem, you would need to get a new engine in which case there is still no guarantee it would not burn oil. There are people on this board who are on their 3rd or 4th engines.

The only issue with OC is found in the '05+ 6MT G35s, if you don't mind a AT there's no worries....very few! If you need the MT then there's the option of buying a Nissan extended warranty. Not 100% knowledgeable on the cost of a new shortblock + labor but the warranty might be a better deal!

I would suggest get the infiniti extended warranty. I bought extended warranty for my car and it cost me about 2K and it covers everything a factory warranty covers upto 100K miles. There are other companies that may be a little pricey like about 2.5K but have other benefits like flat tire replacement and stuff...Shop around.
