Warning: "Love Bugs"
I live near Dallas but picked up my G35 in Houston about a week ago, on the way back home we passed through a city called Huntsville. Its on 45 comming out of Houston and 155 nearing Tyler and I20, anywho we ran into MILLIONS on of these tiny black bugs [its mating season...] When I get home, where I have never seen them, I learn they are quite a problem in and around Huntsville which again is aroudn East Texas. The bugs are about 1-2cm long and probably an inch when mating together. They are dark black with a orange or red dot on them...OK, so heres the bad part...the bugs have an acid in them when left on your car too long in the sun begin to chip the paint. A friend learned this the hard way unfortunately. His truck wasnt in the garage but parked in the shade for just a few days and parked in full sun at school for 4 hours for the same amount of time. When it came weekwend and time to wash the truck he found the bugs took the paint with them! Other people have had this problem also...so if you see these bug on your car and especially if you are in East Texas wash them off ASAP!
Just thought I'd try to help out the few in my area! Thanks
Chris

Thanks for the (bug)heads up! I learned to get any bug/bird crap off your car asap after I stupidly let bird poop sit onmy Saab's hood for a week. As they say, never again.

Re: Warning: "Love Bugs"
Got some break in miles on a trip to College Station and the Houston last weekend... and yeah, the love bugs are absolutely ridiculous this year. My brother lives in C.S., and he was saying that their "season" should only last a week, but it's been going on for about three weeks now, and horribly bad compared to years past.
By the time I drove from C.S. to Houston, almost the entire front bumper of my G was black with lovebug splats. No BS about the acid in them, though... get it off as soon as possible.

Re: Warning: "Love Bugs"
A trick my dad used to do was to take a gallon of water and mix in some baking soda. Put this into a spray container and every night spray your front bumper and (while the love bugs are still fresh) gently wipe them right off. I don't do this, I just wash the G ~ once a week, but you might want to give it a try. Also the bugs don't chip your paint they actually "etch" it with their body acids. The baking soda is basic, which actually "neutralizes" the acid and keeps your car from being damaged.

You can thank the University of Florida for "love bugs". They were created to eat/kill mosquitos. What they didn't anticipate was their breeding process and how quickly they multiply. Go Gators!
