Added red LED cluster to door reflector
Added red LED cluster to door reflector
Over the weekend I added LED clusters to the stock door reflectors on the coupe so that they illuminate when the dors are open. Here are the pictures, I had to correct them for brightness...let me know what you think.
Re: Added red LED cluster to door reflector
I thought that they were supposed to light up when you open the doors. I thought mine were broken.

That is VERY Cool. Can you do a writeup on how you do that so I we can add it to the DIY section?
That would be great.
Also where did you get the parts?
Thanks - Joey Avino

Re: Added red LED cluster to door reflector
Yea, I couldn't believe it either that they didn't light up! I removed the reflector to see if the bulb was burned out and found NO SOCKET! Well, this mod took care of that. I bought a pair of 8-LED cluster Dome & Utility lights from www.superluminations.com ($6.99 each) but you can really use any light source that you want. Since the housing that the LEDs were mounted in was a bit too large, I carefully broke the outer casing to remove the LED cluster which was mounted on a small PC board. I then placed a small drop of hot glue on the top of the LEDs and placed the assembly inside the stock reflector. The board is very light so a small amount of hot glue is all you need. The cluster is so bright that the illumination spreads across the whole reflector. I then carefully pried open the bottom of the door panel and ran the wires over to the existing white step light that lights when you open the door. Just loosen the step light housing by carefully prying up each end. You can then wire the LEDs to that socket either by soldering the wires or wrapping them around the brass contacts. The negative wire of the LEDs should go to the socket closest to the front of the car. Don't worry though, if if doesn't light, just reverse the wires. That's it. The whole job took me about an hour and it looks great.

Sorry TopTech, it's www.superlumination.com (without the "s" on the end). Actually, here's the link to the page with the 8 LED Dome & Utility Lights : http://superlumination.com/bike.htm
Just scroll down to near the end of the page. Like I mentioned, you can use any type of LED cluster that will fit in the reflector area but I found that this one worked fine when removed from the housing. Good luck.
