Switching from synthetic "blend" to full synthetic
Switching from synthetic "blend" to full synthetic
I've got an '06 with about 26k on it. I'm wondering if I should make the switch to fully synthetic oil as opposed to the "synthetic blend" the dealer has been putting in it the past few oil changes that I've owned the car. They had suggested it because there was no record of what oil was previously used in the car. Just looking for some pointers on this. Thanks.
I wouldn't switch on a high mileage engine, like for instance on my wife's Jeep that has 145K on it.
But on a car with only 26K, the only reason NOT to switch would be the extra cost of synth. If you can handle that, then go for it.

Go for it.
But don't forget just because you have synthetic doesn't mean change your oil later.
Its better to change your oil more with non synthetic than letting the fully synthetic sit in there for 3k+ miles.

I really like your attitude, "You want the best for your car!" This is good to hear....Mobil 1 5W/30 is the best synthetic, and you can buy it at Wall Mart in a 5QT jug. Using a quality filter like Mobil 1 is also a good idea but WM doesn't carry them so you need to shop around at a/p stores like Pep Boys or on line. G/L

Mobil is a good oil. I don't think it's the "best" though. But certainly nothing wrong with it. Just to confuse the OP more, Mobil 1 is built on Group III base stocks. Technically it's a highly refined dino oil.
If you want a "true" synthetic, you need to go to something like Amsoil, or perhaps Castrol EDGE. Or the European Castrol. Or there is ONE Mobil 1 still built on Grp IV stocks. Can't remember which

My main concern with switching over was not knowing if it would be bad for the motor. I've had some friends switch to synthetic at high mileage with other cars, and messed everything up for them. So I figured if it was a safe bet, I better make the switch now.
It shears to a VERY thin weight very quickly. This leads to spun bearings.

And that's only the tip of the iceberg.
NOTHING about M1 is superior to your run of the mill dino oil. In fact, you'd be safer with the dino oil and just changing it more often.
Now most of what I've posted is in regard to forced induction (Subaru turbo)applications. That may not be appliccable to you. However, why wouldn't you want to use the most shear stable and best lubricating oil available for your car, FI or not? If you want to, I can promise you that M1 is not what you are looking for. I won't make any claims about what the "best" oil is, because what's "best" in one application never holds true across the board. But I can tell you very easily what one of the worst "synthetic" (M1 is not even a true G IV/V synth) oils is -- Mobil 1.

It's not crap. Just not any better than anything else. There is a diff. But I appreciate the evidence and it's noted. I'm well aware of the BITOG forums.
I've used Mobil, Penzoil Plat and gave Castrol Edge a try since there was a rebate going on.

motul 8100 ftw for my G sedan
for the coupe I always used castrol syn or castro edge syn and wix oil filter. And did changes every 5k miles.
Op
use catrol, your engine will enjoy it. I myself shy away from mobil1. I just never been a big fan of it.
that new penzoil edge I heard is some good stuff as well.

Yeah you're right. It's no worse than your $2/qt Wal Mart oil if that makes some of you guys feel better
