HELP: Need $12,000 for a 1983 Supra
27,000 miles. Sorry if this is the wrong board but I am scrambling for my dream car. It IS a coupe! I know getting a loan for a GTO is easy but who will lend for japanese collectible cars? What bank will take a risk on a 21 year old car?

I'm assuming you're just looking for advice, and not a loan from one of us.
If you've got a job w/regular income, and no other debt, you can likely get the loan no problem...walk into one of the nearest banks with W2's, paystubs, etc.
Of course, I have no idea what your other debts are, etc...

Re: HELP: Need $12,000 for a 1983 Supra
I had an 83, it was called a Celica Supra back then. There were two "flavors" that year, a performance model with wide tires, wheel flares, spoilers, etc, and a "luxury" model (Type L) with less wide tires, leather interior, fancier radio, digital dash, automatic trans. Engine was the same. Both were RWD with their own body style that was distinct from the normal Celica. . I had the L model. Was a great car - rock solid chassis and a wonderful inline 6 engine. I (my wife, actually) drove it until '91, then sold it to my dad, who basically drove it till the body fell apart sometime in the late 1990s (Minnesota salt). Engine was still going sttrong though. I sold mine for $3k, maybe I'll ask my dad for more money. Let's see, difference of $9k, interest rate of 6% for 13 years....
More seriously, to answer your question, you are going to have trouble finding a loan for this car, even with good credit. Bank generally wants to loan no more tha 80% of the retail value of an auto (so that they have some cushion in the event you don't make your first payment.) I just checked Edmunds, and they say the car is worth maybe $2,000. So even if you got the bank to loan you 100% of the retail value, you are still pretty short. I don't have any ideas on how to make up that much difference.

Yes Just looking for advice. I guess a personal loan is a good way to go. May have to use a 0% credit card for part of it. Banks are good for 5k with a signature but I'll be surprised if they put out 12k uncollateralized.
There is one out on Ebay for 25K ~ 1984 I believe with 2000 miles. That's a bit much but those cars will run for 250,000 like any good inline 6 from totyota should. Rock solid and plenty of torque. I learned to drive a stick in one in 1985. Great cars with the wider tires and spoiler. Fun fun fun and cheap to operate...May just sell the sedan...

Re: HELP: Need $12,000 for a 1983 Supra
That's a very interesting deal for a $12,000 for a 83 supra, I personally have owned a '84, a '87 and a 93', all were non-turbos. They were great reliable cars but were all quite slow.
In Nov 2002 I had an opportunity to purchase a 1990 silver twin turbo 300zx auto trans with only 16,000 original miles from a large nissan dealership whom have purchase this car from a elderly doctor who owns 5 other cars and decided to sell it back to the dealership which he has purchase it from back in 1990.
Well, to make a long story short it sat there on the showroom floor for about 2 weeks with a asking price of $13,995, Yes, that's right $13,995 for an only 12 year old car, a Z twin turbo that was even better than showroom. Damn, in fact you can even eat off of it, it was that clean. Well, I past on that deal waiting for the new 350Z, then saw a picture of the G-coupe and fell in-love.
Well, that's life, I could of saved $23,000 if I have bought that practically new Z "twin turbo".
Damn, can someone turn back time, just once, "Pleasssssse".

Re: HELP: Need $12,000 for a 1983 Supra
I've been on a supra site and everyone is like $3k max. There is more value than that in a toyota with 22k miles but it is a bit slow and undertechnologied comparitively, but it will be about the best cheap transportation you can get. A freakin Scion is $22k loaded and will be only slightly faster. I'd probably pay 7-8 for a great low mile one just becasue there is nothing else out there to get enthusiastic about with low miles. 280z maybe. Maybe I'll look into 300Z's with low miles too. The supra was a better car in 1983 tho
