Washed my car and I get this.....

WHAT IN THE ***???

This is a 2006 IP Coupe, bought it from a forum member in March 2010, who shall not be named yet as I don't want to point fingers yet.

What the *** could cause this? I was just spraying off my car and ALL the paint start peeling and chipping off in pieces!!!

Take a look:

I've never experienced this before with any car I've owned nor my previous 2003 G35 coupe. This is absurd. Does this mean the roof has been repainted and I didn't even know about it? I didn't see any signs of foul play by someone pouring thinner on my roof or anything. This is soooooooo strange. Hope you guys can help.

-Chris

That's what I was thinking. Asking the previous owner now. Gawd, this is horrible. I don't even know how to take care of this. That's bare freakin' metal right there. Maybe tape it up so it won't rust?

Dude, I'm sure yours won't get like this. I knew Nissan paint was weak and soft, but not as soft as this. This is just ridiculous. Who washes their car and the entire roof rips off?

^was going to suggest the same thing. Not all G's look great with black roofs but IP pulls it off nicely, especially with heavy tint on the windows.

Time to start pointing fingers Chris....Ouch! This is an absolutely perfect example of paint done wrong, in your case failure! Previous owner may have done something to the roof, wanting to sell it he had someone give it a "Quickie/Cheap" paint job and this is the result....Sorry! Is that primer under the paint of vinyl? Doesn't look like bare metal. You might try getting enough $ from the previous owner to get it corrected probably $300 to $500 with luck....

Big,

This not the first time. I've washed my car before and this never happened. I started using the ONR no-rinse method but decided to rinse today and BAM, chips. *sigh*

No signs of cracking before. I did notice that when I didn't wash the car for a week, the pollen that stuck to the roof started discoloring the roof. The roof had a yellow stain.

Gary,

I thought it would be vinyl also but when I picked up all the flakes that chipped off, I could see the pearl specks in the paint. I don't think vinyl would be able to replicate the IP paint so well right?

I vote it was repainted and with the staining from pollen, I'll say it wasn't clear-coated or was with very cheap stuff. Looks like primer underneath.

Talk to the previous owner. See whats up and where it got painted. That paint shop should warranty their work. That's bad prep, paint not sticking and why peeling now.
