Will an upgraded air filter (K&N for example) effect the sound of the exhaust?

Yes, it will.

As will a ztube. Both are very good starting mods. You can buy a stillen ztube off a vendor for around 65 bux.

You'll learn a lot on here rockstar1292. It will make it a little bit louder. Not much but you'll notice it.

Thanks for the responses guys. I believe I'm picking up my 2007 g35 coupe tomorrow from the dealer with my dad. He got the car for me because I needed my own, I've been racking up the miles on our leased mazda 3

We had it for about 14 months and there is 21,000 miles on it I hope to learn all about the G on this forum, which is why I joined. I think the car is drop dead gorgeous. I will post pics.

Anyways, instead of re-placing the tube, a friend of mine told me to purchase a short-ram air intake instead? I mean, you can never have a g35 that sounds too "mean"

If you add just a K&N air filter you will not really notice a sound difference, maybe very slightly. If you add a ztube you will just notice a little more engine noise (sucking noise while idle and a little louder in higher RPMs). The G coupe exhaust is already louder than any factory air box you can put on these cars.

I know I'm so excited because it's one of my favorite cars, but then I'm super nervous because it's my first OWN car. I think he wanted it so he can drive it too :P

It's Lakeshore slate. I was told that's a classy color and not much can be done to it exterior wise.

That is a nice color. Not to many of those on the forms. Mostly Black and different shades of gray.

Don't waste your money on short ram intake. K&N drop in filter and Z-tube is the best way to go.

HAHA....as you can tell opinions are like....well you know everyone has at least one. The Z-Tube and filters like K&N will change your exhaust dba level but not enough to be noticeable or get you in trouble. What you will hear is all the air getting sucked in which most of us enjoy about 3500RPM and above....fact!

To answer your question correctly, yes. I just took off my Stillen intake yesterday and replaced the OEM box back on to clean the filter. WAAAAAAYYYY big sound difference. Butt dyno indicates no hp difference since I drove the car over 100 miles today and absolutely no difference in pick up, at all. HP difference was felt after adding: MREV2, spacer, z-tube, catback and last but not least, hi-flo F.I. catalytic converters.
Have fun with the car and post pics. I've had my 06' MT coupe for four years and still haven't found a better bang for the buck to replace it. Enjoy.

I agree with kidtronix. You'll hear more engine noise but not from the exhaust.

It's the first time I hear anything about the 350z intake tube, I thought they were the same.

Just curious can anyone explain the difference in more details ?

^The 350z has the same engine but Nissan made the 350z strictly performance where the G35 is an Infiniti so it only makes more sense to quiet down the luxury line. The 350z intake tube or ztube fits on the g35 perfectly and does not have any restriction, compared to the g35 tube that has resonators to quiet it down. You won't see any performance gain from just the ztube, maybe a tiny bit. But it's only 50~ bucks and frees up some airflow

it roars. i have one. good mod to start off with unless you want just straight power get the MD 5/16 spacer for low end torque/hp and MD 1/2 spacer for higher end power. Best mod I've put on my car by far but i have an 07 6mt revup engine so i have the MREV2 and its the best mod i think for our G's. Just don't **** up the exterior. Its beautiful as is without any changes IMO. Rims, drop and slight modifications. Don't go overboard. Its not my car so just my advice.
