05 Auto Downshift Rev Matching

anyone with an 05 try the downshift rev matching on the 5AT?

I've tried it and it seems to shift very smoothly. The only other triptronic type transmission i've used a lot is the one on the '02 Acura TL-S and it definitely downshifts faster and much smoother than that.

The transmission downshifts automatically to 4th if you're cruising in 5th and switch to manual mode. I didn't realize it did that at first so it caught me off guard. There is still a delay in shifting like the 03-04 but downshifting doesn't cause the car to hesitate. The RPMs just go up and boom you're off...

i've heard that the 03-04 ATs have a harsh downshift from 2-3 or 2-1 but i haven't experienced that with the 05. So it seems they did improve it. Still doesn't shift as fast as one would like but at least its smoother. Since i've only got around 500 miles, I've only done limited testing and not at high speeds or WOT...

Re: 05 Auto Downshift Rev Matching

I read that electronic "rev-matching" may be an automatic feature on the new M45.
Sounds interesting and a great feature.

Re: 05 Auto Downshift Rev Matching

Tom- I was going to post a question about this on the AT in my 2005 G coupe.

I only have about 300 miles on it, and began playing around with the manual AT mode this afternoon. It would come up in 4th from D when moved to manual at roadspeed, and I was wondering if it was not going into 5th when it should. The manual does not give any useful information about this. It seemed like it would not go into 5th gear when "commanded" to do so in manual every time I gave the lever an upward nudge from 4?

Could you please describe what you mean by rev matching for an AT for me as I am not quite sure how it applies here>

Re: 05 Auto Downshift Rev Matching

well supposedly the AT in the 2005s have Downshift Rev Matching, which i'm guessing acts similar to a MT car when you rev match. Before it shifts into the gear, it first revs the engine a little to get into the RPM band of the lower gear thus making the shift smoother and not as harsh. I know in my parent's 02 Acura TL-S when i would downshift it would jerk a little, but the AT on the 05 doesn't jerk at all...

And i know what you mean about when you put it into Manual Mode that it goes to 4th gear automatically.. it actually downshifts if you're in 5th and if you're in a lower gear it stays in that gear. However, i was able to shift up to 5th gear... are you sure you're going fast enough to shift into 5th? the AT won't shift if you're not in the proper RPM band. I'm at about 600 miles so still haven't played with the manual mode that much...

Re: 05 Auto Downshift Rev Matching

All the manumatic coupes (03-05) will downshift to 4th gear because it is the 1:1 ratio on the tranny. Don't worry, all coupes do it.

Tom-

I only noticed the drop to 4th yesterday and at one point, it seemed like calling for an upshift to 5 may have been speed/rpm related. Like you, I have not used the manual mode much yet. It is to easy and tempting to rev over the 4K "breakin" limit while using Manual!

Re: 05 Auto Downshift Rev Matching

I love the automatic downshift from auto 5th gear when you pop it over into manumatic--use it all the time on the freeway when I need to slow down a tad. Also, I've driven the 5AT extremely hard on twisties with other 6MTs and experienced very, very smooth, quick down and upshifts on my 2003 5AT. You can really hammer on mountain roads if you use the manumatic right. The only drawback, performance-wise, is the launch--if you want a tire-smoking start, you're not going to get it with the 5AT. That's fine with me. I have noticed smoother shifting on my 5AT with the seven wire grounding kit, but it could all be in my head. It would be hard to quantify that in any case.

Ehrpower-

I'm a new newbie. What's a seven wire ground kit?

Re: 05 Auto Downshift Rev Matching

Look on the site for "grounding wire" kits--the concept is simple--these cars depend on electronics, but the electricity itself can be highly variable. So, electronic devices tend to get voltage spikes and lows due to inadequate grounding. People have developed grounding wire kits made of high-quality (and attractively colored) cable that help the car's electrical system maintain better current flow to the electronic control unit. Thus, the THEORY (most of it unproven, and subject to huge debates on this forum) is that you can get smoother idling, better mileage, and smoother shifting (only from the grounding kits that ground the tranny, thus the seven wire kits--the seventh wire grounds the tranny). They're fairly cheap and look cool, so I went for it, and have noticed my 5AT shifts better, but again, that could be wishful thinking. Your mileage may vary. Look in the "FAQ & DIY" forum for a long threat on grounding wire kits (and other good topics).

One correction:
See "Hyper Ground "Earthing" Kit Resource Thread" in FAQ & DIY forum. Here's the link:

Re: 05 Auto Downshift Rev Matching

Sounds like Infiniti has a pretty good AT almost like a true "bang box" or SMG from reading the posts here. If Infiniti were to offer a true SMG, that would be nice!

The only thing I don't like about some of the manu-matics out there is that to downshift, you have to pull back as opposed to push forward. I'm not knocking on manu-matics or G35C ATs, but for me I have a natural tendency to push forward to downshift and pull back to upshift (similar to a stick).

Anyhow, good driving!

Re: 05 Auto Downshift Rev Matching

well for the most part I think the manumatic is always push forward to upshift and pull back to downshift as it corresponds to up for + and down for - a gear... The advantage the SMG type transmission has is that the shifts are faster and probably harsher. The 5AT on the G is still sluggish when it comes to shifting but they feel smoother and sometimes i don't even feel the shift...

2005 AT Rev Matching

Today, I played around with manumatic mode on my G.

I only have about 300+ miles on it and am still in the "bay-it" mode.

After opening the windows, down-shifts were definitly accompanied by an extra, very quick throttle blip. Really cool, and better than I could do on my previous manual shift BMW. Now, if only the car had paddle shifters!

I imagine as I drive the car more aggresively, with higher RPMs, this will be more fun to hear, and lead to smoother downshifts?
