Seeking Insight about Buying 04'
Hey Guys,
I came across a 2004 Infiniti G35 Coupe 5AT, Ivory Pearl Exterior, Black Interior Leather, Fully loaded (except Navi), 103 000km, Stored during Winter seasons. I will be taking a look at it soon. However, before i take things further, this is my question for you current G35 owners.
-How reliable/durable is the G35 ?
-Is maintenance costs terrible compared to other vehicles (Acura TL) ?
-Fuel Efficiency ?
Overall, my last question is if you could go back time, do you regret buying your G35 ? I have been in a dilemma for a long time regarding choosing cars, i was stuck between the G35 coupe and Acura TL. But in the end, i personally like the looks of the G35 more.
So, if all goes well, i am looking forward to owning my first G35 soon !!
Thanks guys !!

I was the same way, G35 or TL. Liked the look more and handling. It's o.k. on fuel, it holds a lot more gas then my last car. I love my G. Haven't had anything go wrong with it yet (knock on wood). But its a solid car. I have a 05 5AT. Just make sure to tint your windows if you do decide to get it. My black leather would kill me if my windows weren't.

This is not a car you want if that's on your top 3 list of concerns.
You'll get hooked on the exhaust note, so you will be reving the car higher than necessary to hear it more.

I don't regret buying my G for a second.
I used to average 23-25mpg with my G35, i do between 21-26 with my g37 now depending on how much stop and go traffic driving I do. Mine was a 6mt though, I'm sure you will get about the same mileage if you're light on the right foot. Also, I've never had any issues with my G35 while I owned it, other than a sunroof rattle, but one visit to the dealer and that was taken care of. I'm sure it was also a TSB....
There's one member here that went from a G, to a TL, and then back to a G.
I've had mine going on 5+ years now. I ordered it new and took possession Dec 2005. Never had a major problem (or even a minor one). I'll drive it til it leaves me on the curb and then I'll buy another. Where are you located? There's a lot of "local guys" that help with maintenance along with some really great DIY's here.
Some things off the top of my head: Our cars like to drink oil. Don't push out the oil changes and keep an eye out on the level. Sometimes the CD players go out. If you're planning on changing it out, it's no big deal. I had it happen and it was a quick fix under warranty. You're probably out of the warranty due to the age, but there's always things for sale to either upgrade or replace evenly in the Marketplace.
As far a fuel efficiency, it really depends on how you drive. There's nothing like punching it and hearing the car growl.
If I'm pushing it I'll get 17mpg. If I drive like a grandma, I'm getting 23-ish. I drive evenly both in the city and commuting. I didn't buy my G for fuel efficiency. I love the looks, the sound, and how it feels to drive it.
Hope that helped.

okok I'll be good now.
I have heard several times on this forum that the IP color with the black interior is a rare find so you have that going for you. Most members will flame the auto trans but at least your tires will last twice as long
Fuel efficiency is absolutely horrible though, I'm getting between 225-275 miles per SIXTY DOLLAR tank. Gotta keep that in mind, not sure if the TL suggests premium fuel, but understand that the G needs premium (though some will argue otherwise).

I'm getting somewhere between 20 and 25 mpg in my '04 6mt coupe, mostly highway miles though and I rarely beat on it.
Someone already mentioned the CD player... when I bought mine, the audio would go in and out on one side and I had to bang on it to fix it. Note, this only happens when playing a CD. So bring a CD for your test drive! I, too, got it replaced under an extended warranty.
Test both window motors.
After buying any used car, it's easiest just to flush/change all fluids from the get-go so that you can schedule future maintenance more easily. Also, I'd recommend:
1) Change the brake pads and resurface rotors if they're not too worn. This will also allow you to spot any irregularities in wear, caused by a stuck piston or something.
2) Suspension bushings.. another easy swap
3) Throw in a new intake filter, and clean your throttle body while you're at it. When I bought my G, the filter (and hence throttle body) was so filthy that the car felt like it was going to stall when starting cold.
4) Run some BG injector cleaner in your next fill of the gas tank.
5) Wait for a nice day, and clean the gunk out of the upper plenum. Take advantage of the accessibility and swap out your plugs too!
6) Wetsand and polish your entire car.
7) Wax it like 8 times.
8) Start smoking cigars so you have an excuse to stand outside and stare at it for unreasonable amounts of time.
I'm getting carried away now. G's are fun, buy that f*cker!
