Newbie! Help me decide!

Hi All, I been searching around online and this forum seem to be most informative. Please help me decide!

A freind of mine is selling a 2003 G35x ( AWD) sedan for cheap but the catch is it need a new engine and transmission. Anyhow, I have $ 2500 put aside and thinking of just replacing it myself. ( Ive done typical engine swap with honda's).

My question;

1. Is $2500 enough for swap? ( Full engine(or long block) / transmission)
2. How difficult the swap? I'm looking for the same type of engine, nothing upgrade. Is there enough "wiggle" room in the engine compartment? ( Sorry im used to 1.8 honda engine.lol)
3. Where can I get longblock/ transmission? Reputable company I can order online?

Thank you in advance!

Ryan

Hi,

I'm not talking about a "brand new" short block from the dealer. A used engine / transmission with a lower miles. I'm looking at ebay right now and shows $1000 for transmission and $2,000 engine with 50k miles.

Can you provide me with other reliable source/shop where I can get these?

Sorry I wasn't clear with my initial post. I'm a newbie on this forum / Nissan world. I dealt with Honda all my life and done numerous swap on different Honda vehicle so I'm well aware of what I'm getting into. I have complete tools to tackle the swap job. I was wondeering who can provide me guidance as far a cost, difficulty and resource where I can get the part.

Thank you in advance!

Look around on the web for service manual to see what you are getting yourself into. I would imagine by the time you are all said and done it will come out to $4000. You will find new parts you need to replace due to age of vehicle and other expenses pop up. How much is he selling you the car for and that will help you decide. If the engine and transmission is blown you need to step back and think what else is about to blow and how was it maintained. These cars cost more in parts and labor to maintain than a honda/acura. The labor you can cover but ultimately parts still add up and in your case almost $3500-$4000.

Look at the cheapest

66k miles & clean autocheck. $10,900 and you can probably negotiate to $10k. That means car without engine and trans is less than $6k. The car is 2004 and probably lower mileage than your buddy. I would say his car is worth $3-4k with blown engine and trans if not less than that since you are covering labor which would be $750-$1250 for engine and trans.

This one is $8k private party with 100k and i am sure you can negotiate some more on it. This is an 04 model as well and subtract 4k your buddies car is worth $3-4k but given his is 03 then i would say $2500-$3500.

Thank you for your feedback!

The car currently has 124k, he babied the car and no known problem when it was running. He is asking 4k for the car. ( Car is in mint condition in and out) so I was thinking spending $2500 to swap the engine and transmission so I can give it to my fiance.

How much does a used engine and transmission ( around 50k) goes for this car? I believe its a VQ35DE ( correct me if im wrong). Also are the transmission for VQ35DE interchangeable?

Thanks!

How can both the engine and transmission both be bad? Seems like one would fail before the other.
