3rd Gear Crunch !

I have been looking at a lot of threads and it seems this problem comes up a lot. When i shift up from second to third I get a CRUNCH sound and feeling in the transmission. I know this cant be the clutch because every other gear shifts fine. I am hoping it is not the transmission either....Anyways I just drove cross country and put 3500 miles on it in 6 days. I am really hoping that Its just the trans fluid. Can anyone help me on this issue...its an 03.5 G35 coupe sport.

Sounds like it may be the synchros in your transmission. I just had this problem fixed under warranty at the dealership by putting a new transmission in. How many miles are on your car?

^^ Thats what I am thinking as well. If it's just that one gear then that leads me to believe that it's the syncros.
Does it happen at all RPM?

Notchiness can be due to old fluid and I would change out the fluid before you do anything drastic and only use STOCK NISSAN MT FLUID. In reality what you need is the newer cd009 transmission 6-speed Manual. This will solve all your problems and has beefed up synchros to cure the issues you are experiencing. The cost can be between $1500-3000 when all said and done.

CD009 Used: 650-900 + shipping. New $1850 shipped
Clutch kit / flywheel: $800
Labor: $500-$750

These are rough rough estimates but should get you an idea of what you are looking for. Fwiw the cd009 tranny was used in build date 07/04 for 350z and for G35 06/05. The 350z remark I heard from a vendor on the 350z forum and for the G35. I am using my own personal vehicle which was build date 06/05 and has confirmed cd009.

I was worried about that, I just dont really have the funds to drop 3 grand on a new tranny, car only has 55,000.

sounds like the synchros in the tranny to me, i had this issue aswell. i switched to amsoil on teh rear diff and the tranny, it got worse. then i bought oem fluids and its a big inprovement., so try doing a fluid flush first. you can do it at home its easy enough

I would bring it to the dealer and see what they say. Though you are past the 6 year limit of the powertrain warranty, you are well within the 70,000 mile limit for it and if you have a good dealer and the service adviser is having a good day they may see it can be good-willed. Worth a shot...

Otherwise just keep driving it (it'll sound like crap, but it'll work) until something goes wrong and then you can put a new transmission in then.

Yeah Im having the tranny fluid replaced as we speak. going to pick it up in a couple of hours. Nissan charged me 130 $ for all the oil and tranny fluids ! anyways the problem seems to be going away, hoping the change in tranny fluid will help it out. thanks for all the help guys.

I paid about $80 in tranny fluid alone from Infiniti so that's really not that bad of a price. Hope it helps though!

Thumbs up Amsoil and Sticky 3rd gear

I had the same problem. 3rd was always a little harder to get into, but got worse about 20K into a switch to Amsoil GL4. I changed it today at 25K, with another round of Amsoil and it was like night and day. Smooth shifting, like new. I think this amsoil is great up until about 20K of use, then you need to switch it. Probably best just to get the OEM fluid. I spent almost $60 on the Amsoil anyway. Not much different than OEM I am sure in price.
