Axle Clicking in 2005 G35 Coupe

Hi Everyone,

I'm at Beshoff Infiniti in San Jose, CA right now with my 05' G35 Coupe. There was a recall for the Side Airbags and I'm getting them done right now. I got here at 7:40 AM and It's 9:20 AM right now and they're still not done.. They said that it would only be 40 minutes...

Anyways, I had them check out this clicking noise that happens every time I move the car, reverse or anything. The service rep told me that it's a common problem on G35s, 350zs, 370zs.. where the axle needs greasing.. They confirmed that it was in fact the problem. I had asked them to look into this a year and a half ago when I brought my car in (when it was still under warranty), but they couldn't find out what the problem is. Now, they want $225 from me to grease the axles...

Is anyone out there familiar with this issue? Does it really cost that much to grease axles? Do you think it's fair for them to charge me on this when I asked them to look into this before?

Regreasing the axles splines is a very easy task and involves no parts at all except some grease. I think $225 is too high for labor and would just go to a local nissan mechanic to have it done. What is hilarious is NISSAN will only pay out .7hrs in labor for one side and 1.1hrs of labor for both sides. Instead the stealership wants to rape you and charge you for way more than what TSB calls for. I think hourly rate should only be $100 per hour so I would say no more than $150 for the labor and even that is very high. I think $75-$100 is fair to have the axles regreased.

Thanks for the input, faiz23. It's just too bad because I do believe in going to the dealership to retain it's resell value. But times are tough and money is tight. It would have been nice if they caught this while it was still under warranty when I had asked.

By the way, Thanks for posting the TSB! I just saw that. I'm printing it right now to review.

No issues we have a local member who is working on a DIFF swap and planning on regreasing his axles so this will come to use for him and others as well. Pretty easy task and just time consuming nothing really that warranty such a high labor charge except the fact that the stealership has to put food on the table for there family.

Do you know if you MUST use the type of grease they specify in the TSB?

No man just get any sort of quality grease that is high temp and won't wash away. I would try to get the Molykote but it is hard to find. It should be a MOLYBDENUM based AKA MOLY grease. Also try to find something like Permatex that has copper since it has high temp properties. Honestly anything will be better than what you have in there right now which is barely anything left.

If you're a DIY guy you can do this in an hour and a half and the total cost to you will be around $8 for the grease. It's a simple job if you can turn a wrench and to pay anyone over $200 to do this is a crime.

Also, you don't have to have the dealer to perform maintenance for your car to retain it's resale value. Just keep detailed records of what you have done, when it was done, how many miles at the time, and all of your receipts. People just want to see the car was maintained, most don't care who did it as long as it was done regularly.

So i found a place to grease up my axles for 60 bucks while changing my brake pads and resurfacing my rotors in the back.

I paid 60 for the axle greasing and 150 to change my brake pads and resurface rotors. took about two hours to complete everything.
