Tried Drifting for the 1st time!

I went to the Atlanta DGTrials Drifting event on Saturday.
I had a blast and it was worth every penny! I now have so much more respect for Drifters and especially for the ones that do it well.

I was probably the worst one out there, but you got to start somewhere! Next time I will have the car setup a little better.

If you get a chance to do this, you will love it and your tire dealer will love it too.

Here are a few pics:

Those pix look very cool! Damn, I hope you don't chew through your tires too fast though. What event was that? It looks like you had an instructor to tell you what to do?

My SO3's are nearing the end of their life so I decided to go for it.

Next time I am going to find some cheap a$$ hard rubber tires for the stock 18's and get the stiffer sways.

The next event is in Ocala

Driftings FUN!
Don't even bother if you dont have your suspension dialed down right!

Here's a little parking lot drift...

Most anyone can start a drift in the G since the rear tends to slide out easily. The true art is the transition from one drift turn to the next.

Our cars are heavy, but with the supension dialed in some of that can be overcomed.

I had an instructor ride with me for about 6 runs and that was worth its weight in gold.

If you can make it out to one of these events, don't hesitate to ask for the instructor to tag along, thats what they are there for.

In the following pics, notice the Black G with the Nismo sways. He has far less body roll than I did and a better tire setup.

The Z is on stock supension.

The other DG has the Nismo sways.

You don't have to have big horsepower to drift...It's all about handling and understanding your car. You have to really know how to balance it out. In my opinion the G35 would be a hard car to drift with all the weight and all plus with the VDC and independent rear suspension. If you noticed most drifter cars are usually 240sx, AE86 Corolla, Supra, Rx7, etc....these never came with high tech features and can be tossed like a salad. There easy to break traction but actually controlling it is a different story. Also cheap cars (except Supra/RX7)!!!The funny thing is all of those professional drifters can make the car go anyway they want!

If you want to read more about drifting...you should go to some of those cars listed above car forums or stuff like..http://www.driftfactory.com/ubbthreads/
Also you can even go to local drifting events cause they are worth it!

Remember drifting isn't about doing a fishtail or making your car slide cause a monkey can do that. It's like an art now =)

Nice.
You should visit our site as well
http://www.driftsession.com

there's some brief examples of the many drifts are there:
http://www.driftsession.com/technique.htm

They most effective types for the heavy G35 are Feinting, clutching, and power-over drifts. as pointed out, the weight of the car hinders a little bit. But when you're pulling high speed drifts. the weight can be a blessing, as it helps in momentum.

It's hard to pull quick transitions ie, choku-dori in the G. And the throttle on the G is a little abrubt, the torque hits you out of nowhere, then you're in a spin out. So you need to be moving fast...slow drifts are hard on the G. You need lots of braking, and throttle control. your safeguard is the e-brake to make more oversteer when you need it.

Just to brag,
Hawaii has some pretty good talent. Currently we have 3 sponsered drivers competing on the continental US. Barry Wong, Ross Petty, and Steve Oliberos.
Here's a video of what Oahu, Hawaii has:
