Ok ive been using 88 midgrade and 86 unleaded gas for about 2 months and got a Check Engine light that freaked me out. The code was PO 0442 meaning there is a leak in my EVAP system (small Leak) So i figured it would have been maybe a gas cap or of course a leak in the lines. Yesterday i filled up with 91 premium just to put in not thinking that would shut my Check engine light and for about 20 miles on my way into town it shut off after bieng on for about a month an a half. So im guessing maybe thats why i got the check engine light. Just wanted to let some of you maybe that have thier check engine light that this could be the reason because of a lower octane. Just wanted to see if this helps any one

You got the check engine light because the gas cap was loose, or because you filled the tank with the car on/or key in ignition.

Not because of Gas grade.

Thanks for the "Heads Up" if I'm ever challenged enough to put poor quality or low grade gas in my coupe I'll know how to fix the "check engine soon" error code.

Why would you put anything but premium in your tank?

Gotta pay to play, Premium is the only grade that we use. (2 VQ's in the fam)

I'm pretty sure you are one of the few that use 86 octane.

I used 87 octane for two years straight, and I got no knocking. I read somewhere that the onboard computers compensate for it. I use 91 octane now though. We don't even get 93 here in Arizona.

You can use 87 AKI rated gas, your ECU will compensate for it.

But if you READ your manual it states that you can only use that fuel with at least 1/4 tank with premium fuel. Additionally you should not utilize the car for long periods of time with this fuel and you cannot accelerate sporadically as it may cause engine damage.

the guy before me always put 91 in the tank (where the hell he got 91 in my area i have NO idea at all ). when i bought it, i started using 87 because it was cheaper. one day i switched to 93 (all I can find in my area ). it runs SOOOO much smoother. accelerated quicker, sounded better. all around improvement. and better mileage by about 2 mpg

Thanks I guess??? So confused on why you would run the cheap stuff in a sports car. Consider yourself lucky, my engine pings slightly with 93!
