2005 coupe loud squealing from brakes without braking????

I had a unsual problem with the car tonight I started to hear a big squealing sound from the back wheel like a that sounded like nails on a blackboard...nothing unsual here nothing was stuck in there I even check the small metal plate behind the rotor.I think it came from the rear wheel driver side.

I lift up all my wheels one by one to shake them just to see any kind of loose indicating a bad bearing ...but no everything was perfectly steady no loose was spoted and I don't have any shaking of the car or handling weird behavior.
One thing that I notice is that I get some speed and I apply the brakes harder the noise stop for a brief period of time and I can continue to roll with the car without noise for a few mins before it come back. I guess while they're hot it allright but as soon as they cool off a little it come back.

I also saw that the noise is always when the wheel move it can be on neutral when I push the car and the squeal would be there but lighter. If got enough speed and I am slowing down I feel the squeal take more time to slow down than the wheel (like a floating piece who was building up by speed of the wheel I guess). but when the car completly stop by pushing the brakes all the sounds spot at the same time.

I know it's a tricky one but I wonder if anyone ever had this problem? I also read about caliper seizing/stuck problem could that be the symptoms?

Thanks anyways,

Have you checked your rear brake pads?

That's the next step I plan to do this weekend.

I just tough that when brake pads were done they would be noisy only when you're breaking not when your just rolling with the car. I could be on the highway a full speed and the noise would be there continuously if you know what I mean?

I've check my pads 3 weeks ago and they were at 5 mm in front and 6 mm at the back...I got brand new ones last summer

Given the fact you aren't applying pressure to the brakes and getting this noise it could be a hanging caliper?

Check your manual - believe I read somewhere that's an actual alarm to let you know that your brakes need replacing.

My wife has a 05 G35x sedan that I think had the problem..but it might be a feature on the coupe too..

Sounds like either a pad sensor or a frozen caliper and you may have started digging into the rotor.

* Sometimes you can get very small debris stuck between the pad and the rotor, it's not common but it does happen.

I think I've read the same thing as an early warning for worn pads. The breaks will squeal during normal driving when they need replacing.

My $$ on the low pad warning, our Infinitis wear out rear pads before the fronts....strange but true!

OP, squeling noise when stepping on brakes usually are caused by hot spots on the rotors or the rotors are wharped. Hope is spelled that right... Other causes are low brake pads, if too low they will grind. Sqeuling can also be caused by cracked brake pads which does happen. Just get it check at a shop. There are many shops out there that offer free brake inspections. GL...

Thanks for your answers guys.

I found out what was the cause a few weeks ago, It seems the caliper piston from the rear driver side was stuck or barely moving. So it used my brake pad prematurely and the steel plate on top of the pad moved and was rubbing on my rotor hat when was car was moving. (I just got this car 2 months ago so I think also that the previous owner didn't invest a lot in quality brake pads).

So I am taking appart the caliper this weekend and clean it from inside out and bleeding the brakes after. I hope it will do the trick if not it's go by a new caliper.

I'll keep you updated

Thumbs up

It's just a thin little metal clip that will rub on the rotor to let you know it's time and hopefully save you from ruining rotors. It's not as if there is an electronic sensor with a dash light, but come to think of it that would be pretty slick.

Ohhh... Brake hardware kit... I honestly thought my car was missing this sensor because when I put BBK's on the front, I didn't remember seing any wear sensors...
