everything
This is what happens when you ask idiots about financial decisions on the Internet...

He's looking to lower his payments, plain and simple. Dumb dumbs... he is looking at a G for that reason. Keeping it doesnt seem like an option to him, otherwise he's not gonna be gaining any extra income by keeping the bimmer.

There are about 1000 posts already discussed about G35 vs. (insert other car here) Go to advanced search and change the criteria to Relevency instead of Posting Date. You will yield far better result with Relevency.

Dude, if you're a student, you would want a car that is reliable, low maintenance and worry free.

The G35 Coupe is not that car.

Get a Toyota, Lexus, or Honda Acura.

A 2006 IS350 is a good choice. Much more reliable than this POS Car. Seriously

And a car that has caught my eye is the G35 coupe. Please let me know if this is in fact a good idea!
Which year would you recommend?
Is there different engine sizes?
What mods would you recommend making?
Tell me the pros and cons, from your experience and sell me the car as if this is really the right choice for me to make. I can still financially afford the BMW but its going to make things tough once college starts... :/

Thankyou all!
I have an 06' 6mt G35 coupe and absolutely LOVE it.
Your best bet is to get an 06'/07', they have better interiors and accessories than earlier models.
The gas mileage isn't the greatest but my personal experience with the reliability is excellent.
The 6 speed manual coupes have had some issue with oil consumption but that is not the norm from my research.
The majority do not suffer from this.
You can get the coupes used for really cheap right now too.
The engines are all the same 3.5 liter V6.
The 06'/07' 6mt have the revup engines, higher reving.

With regards to best performance mods, you're not going to get a huge hp/tq increase without going FI.
That being said it hasn't stop me from modding my exhaust and engine.
The best NA mods will be
HFCs or test pipes
aftermarket exhaust
Motordyne lower plenum & plenum spacer
ztube

You'll want to do a lot of searching on this forum for aftermarket mod info.
The forum has a lot of information and helpful people.
Don't let the responses in this thread be an indicator of what to expect in the future.
If u have any other ques feel free to pm me.

Its sad, but the Beamer is going to have to go for awhile. I am sure there will be another purchase for one after college. But for now, its not affordable.
Uhm, you are in college. Your car will get hit. You'll have drunk people in it. You'll use it as your personal taxi. It will see lots of short trips. It will be maintained in a questionable way. It will probably sit outside alot. Worst of all - no one in college worth talking to gives a **** what you drive unless they are shallow, flaky, or looking for an Mrs. Degree.

Why not buy a car outright? I'd look into used corollas, camrys, accords, cobalts. You are in college. Deal with the downgrade and come out ahead with less debt. Insuring a G is surely much pricier than any of the cars above. I'd find a 7-10K car and call it a day.

I will add my parents provided a car for me in college (A Nissan Altima). Simple car. Reliable and decent. Was scratched a ton of times in campus and apartment parking lots and was hit once. I'm just saying that I wouldn't rock a G in college. When it comes time to sell all these little things will be picked apart at buying time. Yes, there were plenty of time i wanted a nicer car, but after a few party nights and weeks in the campus parking lot, you will agree that going for less will get you more.

Another random story: I lived in some really dumpy apartments to cut costs my senior year. We had a slew of break-in's at my apartment complex, and I don't think a flashy car infront of your place would lend thieves to think you have nothing of interest inside. Jusayin'.

Good luck with school!

Where in the world did you go to college? Remind me never to visit that town. I'm a senior at a local university and have never had any problems with people scratching/hitting or doing anything to my car(s). To the OP, if you like the G, buy it. It's cheaper and still looks very good. Goodluck to ya!

That being said, the G35 will be less on maint costs and parts, you can take it to a Nissan dealer and have the same factory quality service done, while if you want factory service on your Bimmer you have to go to the Bimmer dealership. After having a chipped 2001 Audi S4, I know the expense of a German turbo car when things start to go south. When I sold it I went to the G35 because of reasons similar to the OP. I am very happy with my decision even though it doesn't have nearly the power or the status. Idk why people on here seem to hate their G's but seriously I think they'd bitch no matter what they drove.
This. While the BMW would be nice to keep, schooling should take priority at this point. Sacrifice a little now so you can enjoy life even more later on.

parking in the commuter lot will do this. Girls with huge purses and metal fobs or careless people who aren't worried about your car but keeping dry, etc etc. My sister went to another college and it happened to her, too. Maybe it's a southern thing...

Probably just bad luck. That could happen at the grocery store. There is no reason to believe that parking at a college will result in damage to your car.

ps I have parked in the commuter lot for 3 years straight. call me lucky I guess bc I live in the south lol.

I am not the type of person to use my car as a personal drunk taxi. Although I am young, I am more of a respectable individual. Never been in a traffic accident or had any violations what so ever. I dont hangout with individuals that hold their selves to a lower standard then I do. Seattle is expensive, and although I could afford keeping the BMW, its just unrealistic and is going to hold me back tons financially.

Are g35 coupes really that bad? You guys all (except for a select few) seem to be against the vehicle. If so, what other choices would you recommend? I have a descent amount of $$$ to work with. Just would like lower monthly payments then a Bimmer at this point in time of my life...

You have to understand a few things when you come to a car forum. Many people only sign up to figure out a problem they have with their car. This is a very small percentage of people that actually own this car. Most of them are out enjoying their ride!

So what I should be doing, is steering away from this car? If so what else should I look into?

I would still like a nicer looking luxury/sports car.
