Any reccomendations on what to go with? I'd like to do this as I find the system has no treble or mid range for that matter either. It's too much muddy bass.

 

What kind of money for the speaker upgrades?

 

Im replacing my front speakers with a set of Alpine type R components I have laying around. The only distortion I ever hear is from the front right tweeter for some reason. And whoever said the sound can sound "hollow" is dead on. Our car has no mids, nor a way to control the mid's, which I find strange for a Bose system... oh well... Ill let you guys know how the Type R's do after this weekend.

 

i totally agree. after i installed the aftermarket tweeters, it sounded a lot better. most ppl are either getting the mb quartz components set (includes midrange and tweeter but expensive) or infinity reference 1001t tweeters (only about $65). i got the infinity tweeters and the install is super easy.

 

Thanks, I'm going to head out now to see if I can find any of these in the small city i live in. I am really disappointed with the current sound.

Exactly what I think too.
I went into a shop today and got an experienced guy out in my car and he said the same things too before me saying anything. Unfortunately he went on at length about not being able to solve the problem cheaply. From what I gathered everything needed to be changed to get some kind of decent system.
I really know nothing at all about audio other than what my ear likes when I hear it and to me what we have now is terrible for this level car. My grand Cherokee Limited with an Infinity system blows this one away.

 

realistically, it depends on what you want. if you want to just improve the sound a bit with better/ more crisp highs, than all you need to do is change the tweeters. i bought my infinity 1001t tweeters for $55 shipped. and other members have also agreed on the improved sound with just a change in the tweeters. if you want serious sound with low bass (from a subwoofer) or clear crisp highs, you will have to change the amp and add new speakers/subwoofers. this will be about $500-1000 depending on the quality of equipment you buy. the stereo does NOT need to be changed.

and honestly, have you ever expected excellent/great sound from a stock system? also, OF COURSE the guy at the shop is going to tell you that it's going to be extensive!!! first off, he's probably an audiophile since he's an "experienced guy". also, why would he tell you to go spend under $100 when he can get you to buy over $1000 worth of equipment?

if i were you, go out and buy an aftermarket tweeter and install it yourself. it takes literally 10 minutes for each side. then, judge for yourself. you can always return the tweeters.
