Do not follow gravel truck!

Ah, the ying and yang of life.
The geez went for his first oil change this morning and was told everything was perfect--checked tire pressures and windows cleaned. Chatted with other g35 owners about how brilliant we all were.
drove home feeling fat and sassy, the car was still pristine (except for that parking spot curb stop), when WHAP! --rock hits windshield from gravel truck in front. Adrenaline and knotted stomach.
Now I have this black dot right smack dab in the middle of my field of vision, and I am trying not to obsess over this.
Everyone at work would think I am nuts, but I know I can vent on the forum.
Sigh.....

Re: Do not follow gravel truck!

Check with your insurance company. Most will direct you to try the windshield repair first, and they'll pay for it with no deductible, because it's cheaper for them than buying you a new windshield.

Although, it may not work well for you if it's in your field of view. Can't hurt to try.

i try to stay away from trucks, especially the big macks.. even sitting to the back right or left of these things is bad.. trucks jack up your window.. but smaller cars do it too.. only their angle of trajectory will end up hitting your bumper or grill... open bed trucks are the worst..

Yeah, I was wondering if it can be polished out or such. I will give them a call.
Much obliged

Re: Do not follow gravel truck!

that's jinx, cause same thing happend to me this morning. I was changing lanes and I had to pass behind a truck for just a second. In that second a rock hit the windshield making a very loud noise. when I got to work, I noticed the rock skipped across the hood before nailing the windshield. The windshield didn't star, but left a tiny white dot. You can actually see how the rock exploded and left a circular dust trail.

Damn, that sucks Geezer! If it really bothers you then change the window, cause I know I would if it happened to me. And what you said about your co-workers is so true...there is one here at work that says that I'm obsessed with the forum and the car. I say "F*#K U", "Who would be obsessed about an 87 Camry? Anyway, I'm not really mean like that but everytime he sees me on the website he's gotta throw that little comment and I've had it!

Re: Do not follow gravel truck!

The repair involves injecting the chipped area with some sort of clear polymer. Sometimes it becomes unnoticeable, sometimes it leaves a visible mark. In the second case, this is okay if it's not directly in your field of view.. as it will keep the chip from starting a star or spider web crack. However, if it's right in your line of sight, and they can't make it invisible, you'll probably have to go with a new windshield.

Re: Do not follow gravel truck!

Take it to a repair shop ASAP. I've had it happen 3 times in my old car and once already in the G. It's only like $40 and they tell me each time..."the sooner you bring it in, the better"...the more you drive around, etc, the more dirt that gets in there and when they repair it with the polymer...it's not as strong and leaves a more visible mark. Call someone today. You can even pay like and extra $10 and they'll come to you and do it while you're at work or whatever.

Geezer,

Sorry to hear about that, horrible experience, glad you had a place to vent. I hate those trucks with a passion. I try to stay away from them too, but no matter what there is always one full and spraying down the road with rocks. Someone should sue those trucking companies for overloading their trucks and causing so much damage to other cars, if only the CHP would stop them, as they are definitely a freakin hazard !

Well, good to have a receptive set of ears out there...I called glass company and they said for $40 they drill hole and inject polymer...I guess that is on my schedule today.
Later....

Re: Do not follow gravel truck!

Don't forget to call your insurance company.. many of them will foot the whole $40 for you, with no penalties to your policy for making the claim.

Re: Do not follow gravel truck!

They drill out part of the glass to make the crack look "smoother" so that when they fill it in w/ the polymer that the crack lines aren't as visible...also makes for a stronger bond.
