i would use some bug and tar remover first, get all that S*** off first... wash with soap and water, dry them, (if u have a air comp that will make life easier), then sand the clear coat off of the entire wheel... wash again then paint... But 2 things bro ...1) since im sure your not taking the tires off get a deck of cards and put them in between the tire and your rim so you dont paint you tire... And 2) take you TIME... the trick is for it not to look like a$$ smal coats then finish with about 2 or 3 light coats of clear... Just my opinion

If you're going to sand down the clear, don't bother washing it so hardcore before that.

I painted mine & always get asked if thr powder coated, my trick is prep each wheel. just prep takes me about 2-3 hours, I sand with 400grit making sure to get every edge then use bondo spot putty for all curb marks and junk then sand again with 400 grit then scuff with 800 grit then wash it off really good & let it dry, then put a deck of cards around the edge & paint 2 coats of primer, 3 coats of paint and 2 coats of clear wet sanding between coats and then waiting a couple days and waxing/compounding the last coat of clear since you don't wetsand the last coat.

If it's not too much trouble, share the outcome, even if it's bad. Explain to us what you think you did wrong, or just explain your process. It'll be good for people who may want to try it later.

Best of luck, and have fun with it!

powder coating will hold up better and last longer... mine are currently getting powder coated gunmetal.... something like $200.

To prep the wheels the correct way, sand them, paint them (barrels included), and clear coat them... you are looking at a little over $100. spare the extra $100 and have them powder coated imo.
