Tein Basic coilovers... bouncy ride

Hi all,

I just sold my S2000 and picked up an 04 G35, I needed something more comfortable. Anyways the car came with TEIN Basic coilovers and the car is VERY bouncy especially on the highway. I have never played around with adjustable coilovers but I imagine the issue would have something to do with the suspension travel? I looked up the instructions for the coilovers and it seems there are recomended specs which I may try.

I took a peak at the coils and it seems the adjustment is close to maxed out thus the car is very low. I was planning on raising the suspension a bit as I keep bottoming out. Any suggestions or on adjustments? Im planning to call TEIN tomorrow and get their ideas as well. I'd like the car to be lower than stock but I don't want to worry about bottoming out everywhere I go.

Thanks,

Eric

Simple answer: Tein Basics don't have dampening adjustments, and so you can't control the bounce.

Sell those and upgrade to Stance, F/F, BC, etc. which allow for dampening adjustments. Find the setting you like from there and your bounce/rebound issues will be nearly gone.

As far as bottoming out, dampening will help a little with that too, unless you straight up can't get in your driveway, over speedbumps, etc. At that point, it's up to to if you want to raise the car or not. The guys who have stanced their cars choose to remain low, and pay to play - replacing bumpers, exhaust parts, etc. Others don't like putting the effort into that and choose to roll at just a slightly lower than oem height.

Raise the car up a bit and check your preload on the springs. These coilovers do not have a dampening control to make the car more stiff/bouncy but i would check them both first. To much preload will make the car stiff and will cause less shock travel which may be what you are feeling.

I 2nd the blown shocks.
I just got used tein basics and it's only a little bouncier than stock springs, barely notice the difference with the rears maxed and fronts a little lower.

I had basics and they were not bouncy... they did travel too deep, but it never did bottom out. Blown shocks as others have said. I'm almost sure they have a lot of miles on them as well, since the came with the ride.

I called Tein today and they mentioned to set the suspension to their recomended specs. I did measure the setup now and it pretty close they called for 13.3 front and 13.8 rear, my measurements were 13.2 front and 13.5 rear. I'm not sure if that would be the reason for the problem but I will give it a shot.

How would I go about checking the preload on the springs??

During my call with Tein they said they could refab the coilovers if need be for 125 or possibly more per coilover. For that price I think I would just get new coilovers, not to mention it will take 3 weeks.

How many miles should these coilovers last for? The car has 72k on it and im pretty sure they have been on the car since 5 or 10k.

Well it looks like the problem is fixed. I took some time over the weekend and took a peak at the coilovers. I found the recomended specs for the coilovers and compared those to how they were set up. Well they were WAY off, in addition one side of the car was over an inch lower than the other! After a little adjustment using Teins wrench (that I found annoying to use) the car no longer is near as bouncy as it was. Here's a pic of what one of the coilovers looked like before I adjusted it.

I don't know why but the bottom ring (I think its called a lower spring seat) was not touching the top one!

Indeed, now I just need to find the front and rear jack points so I don't need to jack up all four corners individually.
