Yes I did read it. I did sell my G35 6MT but I noticed that this vibration was becoming "worse" and now was present at approx 5000 RPMS...and then would go away. It will re-occur again at 3500RPM..(as the RPMS dropped)

I owned my G35 since new and did not "beat" on it, and As I mentioned the vibration just recently became noticed and pronounced. Is it NORMAL? maybe, maybe not.. ...

 

Took long enough for the reply. That vibration is normal, and it feels different at different rpm, you can almost "feel" when you need to change gear.

 

yeah i always wonder if this was normal on a MT. this thread cleared it up.

 

Its hard to say what is 'normal' and what isn't. I've driven RWD manual transmission vehicles for over 30 years and I don't notice anything strange about the vibration I feel in my 06 coupe. I drove an 07 G35S that had a little more than this coupe but still not extreme. The OP and some others seem to be describing something excessive. Is it because they aren't used to MTs or is it something wrong with their car? Hard to say and the poster above said it was getting worse. Probably not normal if getting worse.

Also, I'm not going to say putting you hand on the shifter won't hurt anything in theory, but man it is hard to believe resting your hand on the shifter would cause a problem. If you're putting enough pressure on it to cause it to bear, you should feel it and be able to tell. I'd say I've easily driven manual transmissions far in excess of 500K miles and have never had a tranny problem related to synchros, shift forks, etc.

Same thing with my 03 6MT and even worse i have a nasty 3 gear grind

 

Direct linkage to the tranny, soft tranny mounts and engine mounts = vibration. It's simple.

 

thats because the Gs shifter directly connects to the transmission, rather than most cars having linkage reducing the vibration. the Gs shifting is a tighter feel

I was told that it's a solid linkage between shifter and the tranny that's why you feel everything in the shifter, it's also why Infiniti went with the dual mass flywheel, to cut down on some of the vibration. I have a single Piece lighten flywheel, you would not believe the vibration now

Yeah, since ive had my car its done that, id say its normal.

 

Finally, someone got it right. I was reading through the posts as to not repeat it but we clearly need to say this loud and clear... with direct linkage, do not rest your hand on the shifter. doing so can cause the bolt connceting the shifter to the linkage to break. theres another thread here where this happened a couple of years back.. i forgot what the thread was titled though.

 

I'm not buying it. It's one of those things that sounds like there might be something to it but experience and good design suggest that there isn't. For any story of something breaking because of resting a hand on the shifter there are going to be millions of miles driven with no problems.

Regardless, no one is going to change anyone else's mind on this one. But for the sake of science I'll continue to ride with my hand on the shifter, as I have done with every vehicle I've owned for 30 years (all direct linkage, RWD/4WD), and I'll get back to you when something breaks. (It would be just my luck that it would!).
