A Y-pipe is just as it sounds, it's a pipe that has two inlets and splits into one outlet (on these cars). Most vehicles with either a V6 or V8 engine (or any V-series configuration) use them to combine the exhaust gasses from the left bank and right bank of the engine into one singe exhast pipe. It is used as a collector. A quick online search would give you a little insight, I recommend doing so before picking aftermarket parts. You really shouldn't be replacing parts, if you have no idea what they do.
Most people do exhaust mods for sound, as there is no real worthwile performance gains to be seen on these cars.

I replaced my stock cats with BERK's and the difference is like night and day plus it sounds better. If you plan on replacing your stock exhaust from the cats back it wouldn't make any sense to waste your money on just a Y pipe anyways, as a cat-back exhaust would replace this. Forget the Y pipe and invest in HFC's or the ART pipes.

Actually if you want to get specific, a Y-pipe is non-directional. It can be used as a collector/combiner or distributor/splitter. But for the sake of the argument, yes I transposed that portion of my reply, which is apparent by the rest of my post. Thank you for catching that, I will go correct that now..
