Fill the oil
Take it for a 1000 mile test drive
Check the oil level.

i purchased a 6MT last month and looked at all the service records since 10 miles and the previous owner took the car to dealer for every issue and only serviced at the dealer even tires.

long story short if you are buying one with high miles i would start from there and see if it ever was documented and what were the intervals for his oil change.

Yeah, it's super easy for someone to cover it up though. They could simply be throwing a quart of oil in themselves every 1k miles or so. There's really no way to figure out if a car has oil consumption until you've owned it for a little while unfortunatley.

Ask the owner if he'd allow you to take it to a reputable Infiniti dealer and have them do their oil consumption test.

Oil consumption is caused by piston rings failing, finding oil on those spark plugs is strictly a gasket issue which can be corrected by replacement. Buying a used G, there is no real way to know if you have OC problems until you've owned the car. Remember OC only occurs normally with '05+ MT Infinities cause they have the REVUP motors!

thanks Gary. I've edited my post accordingly. I am certain that Infiniti still has their oil consumption test. no? but you'd have to ask the owner if you could do that. also, I don't know if that test is only covered under warranty and you'd have to pay for it yourself. Gary, you know about this?

The dealership doesn't have an "oil consumption test". They simply log miles driven vs. oil drained. So again, it's impossible to tell without possesing the vehicle yourself for some time. Doubt anyone is going to let you "test drive" the car for a month.
