Question Oil Leak Mystery

I have a 05 6mt with around 96k miles, i noticed the other day underneath the car there was minor oil spot. The bottom of the carriage is completely dry.

So few days ago when i did the oil change I removed the undercarriage to get to the filter and oil, is bone dry, no signs.

Then i drove the car everyday and looked for spots in the garage where i park overnight, no spots. I have not driven it since Thursday, today i took it out to wash it, and noticed there was a fresh oil spot underneath the car.

Again i checked underneath and do not see any signs, i also removed the engine cover and do not see any oil signs.

Any ideas?

When i did the oil change there was about 3.5 quarts of oil that came out. The dipstick shows the oil sign as high.

ok, i did a little more research, could it be my o-ring on the oil filter?

How can i tell if that is leaking? Like i said i dont see a new spot everyday, like if the car sits for a while then i see it.

Also, since i just did an oil change with 5w30 synthetic stuff, should i just wait for another change, 4-5k miles, or just do it?

thx

I think you mean the o-ring on the oil cooler. When I bought my car 3 years ago I had that issue, seems like the original owner had taken the car somewhere that overtightened the filter and wore out the ring. I had a very slow leak, a couple of drips at a time, but I could see oily residue around the cooler (it's what the oil filter screws into).

right...

so my question is can i re-use the oil filter? and drop the oil back in the motor that will drain from the oil filter area?

Or get new filter and oil?

Filters are cheap, get a new one. The seals
Aren't meant for multiple uses.

You can just top off after you're done

ok so this morning, i opened the bottom up to replace the oil cooler o ring, and also took a closer look.

The oil cooler area was completely dry like, no sign of a oil leak, however i did replace the o ring since i already bought it and there was a Orange one in there, the new ones are black, i take it, it was never replaced.

looks like at some point the previous owner had replaced the oil pan or gasket, because of the gasket is non-factory, 3 bolts were a bit oily but the oil was black so it could be old oil. Rest of the bolts on the oil pan were bone dry.

Question, can i put some high gasket silicone on the 3 bolts if they leak is coming from there, i can only see oil stain if my car sits for more than 48 hours.. Very slow leak

see pics of the 3 bolts on the oil pan.

Some update,

I was looking thru service records and at 87k during routing service, technician discovered oil pan was leaking and infiniti resealed lower engine oil pan. Parts used ultra grey gasket ma-999mp-am003p.

I am at 97k now and i believe the leak could be back, so in this case do i just use a silicone sealant and cover just the holes as mentioned above or redo the entire seal?

any help would be great.

thx

Pans RTV??

I called the same dealership that did the work, looks like their warranty on the work was only good for a year so missed it by 2 months. They said it would cost around $200 to do it again.

is this a PITA? or can i do it myself easily?

thx

I would just replace the seal/gasket if that is where the leak is coming from. I'm pretty sure they're talking about the little piece of rubber that sits in between the two pans.

I attempted to do this a couple of months ago but the silicone had the lower pan stuck on there and I was unable to pry it off. I also had extra piping in the way which limited my options. Ended up taking the car to a shop and they had it done in 2 hours for $120. If your able to separate the two pans then it shouldn't be hard. If I remember correctly there's 2 oil lines that need to be disconnected and a bunch of bolts (10-12) that hold the pan on.
