That does sound simple - except the sanding part.
I've been reading up on replacing the battery grounding wire, and though it IS the Internet and you'll find negatives on any topic, I found some people complaining about cars not starting, hesitating, even fires attributed to replacing the wire. So do you think there's no issue with me replacing it?

My guess is it works better becuase it probably a deep cycle battery. Those batteries are the shizz. I had a 3000 watt stereo in my blazer and nothing would keep the lights from dimming when bass dropped. So i bought a yellow top battery as a secondary battery and it cured it 100%. I guessing without a stereo and using yellow top as a primary it would do the same as this one, and yellow tops are about 200 at Auto zone
