Sorry for the super noobish question but I haven't had my car for too long it's not my daily and I've only just begun experimenting and just barely getting into the awesome world of JDM cars.I was wondering...say you are going about 65(fwy speed limit) what gear would you downshift to to do a high speed pull? Is putting it into 4th safer than 3rd? because 3rd only reaches about 80 mph.I don't really like downshifting or mashing the gas because I baby my car so much lol
I usually only downshift to 5th or fourth when theirs traffic but I never drive like a maniac on the freeway...anymore that is
(2 speeding tickets in a turbo diesel and im only 19

go for 3rd with rpm match, since third only goes to 80 i'd say 4-5k rpm for the match.

So you're going 65 mph and you're in 6th gear correct? You don't want to be stupid and hit redline so try dropping into 5th and nailing the throttle. Find the results you want for passing. Make sure making these kinda moves you're aware of your surroundings, tickets get more expensive each day....along with gasoline!

I would drop to 3rd, run it out to redline, then hit 4th. If you hit 4th at 65, you may not be into the power band fully yet.Originally Posted by LxV Socal

The gearing in these cars isn't the best in terms of ratios.

Instead of using MPH, use RPM since every car would be different in terms of what speed a gear is capable of.
Usually, it's about a 1000RPM drop between gears (i'm talking general automotive...not G35 specific). So if you are crusing in a car at 3000RPM in 6th gear, you could add about 1000RPM for each gear downwards you go. So 5th would be 4000RPM and 4th would be 5000RPM. Say your redline is 6000RPM. That means a drop to 4th would be short and you'd almost immediately have to shift to 5th.
It's up to you to figure out how many RPM difference there is between gears and if you need a 1 or 2 gear drop to floor it.
Beleive me when i tell you that one day this will be second nature and you'll just know.

If you're doing an all-out sprint from that speed, downshift to 3rd which will put you at just under 5K RPM and you should be able to stay in 3rd right up till 87 MPH. Make sure you rev match before throwing it into that gear too (not just before you let the clutch out, but before you actually put it into that gear).... this is very important.
If you wanted to just sorta pass someone at 65 MPH without making the car work too hard, do 4th gear, which would put you at around 3800 to 4K RPM for the rev match.
I wouldn't bother doing a 5th gear downhshift at 65 MPH because it's only going to change your RPM's from 2400 to about 3K, and won't make that big of a difference in your acceleration(it's better than not downshifting, but not the most significant change... go for 4th instead).
Here is a Speed-To-RPM gearing calculator for a G35 Coupe 6MT (I set the Redline at 6600 since you didn't say what year your car is, and that's the stock redline for a non-Rev-Up VQ35):

I agree with you sir but its better to know how from experienced people rather than a noob trying themselves? Originally Posted by gary c

I just realized that the non-Rev-up G35 might be a great car to use as a Time Machine in case you can't get your hands on a Delorean. You can get right to 87 MPH at the top of 3rd gear so you don't accidentally hit 88 MPH and zip through time to some other era without upshifting to 4th gear.
