P0011 error code: cheap cam position sensor?

I had just changed my oil and 10 miles later I get all three lights on, the VDC, SLIP, and the CEL. I replaced the bank1 cam position senspr and all lights extinguished. Engine runs reasonably well but CEL is back on and after ECU reset, am now throwing a p0011. P0011 is an intake valve timing (IVT) control bank 1 error. I know I have read a few guys talking about bad luck with the cheap sensors.

I'm reluctant to think its the sensor since its not throwing a CPS sensor code anymore. Has anyone seen a P0011 code caused by one of these cheap sensors and remedied it by replacing with an OEM?

That code is for the Intake Valve Timing Solenoid. It is probably "over advanced" meaning it's stuck in the advanced position. you may have a piece of debris stuck in it causing the little piston inside to get stuck, or a similiar problem. Take it apart and clean it, then test it with a 12V source. Google g35 IVT solenoid on Google images to find the part, it's right on the front of the heads on either side. I took mine completely apart, cleaned it and its all good. This malfunction can cause the entire bank to misfire because of disagreeing timing signals, and will throw the dreaded p0300.

if your IVT solenoid is functioning properly, then look at the sensors. It takes 5 minutes to clean and test the solenoid, so that's why i'd suggest eliminating that variable

Absolutley agree. For some reason I was thinking the IVT was under the valve cover. Thanks for the clarification I will check it out. This is a pic of the solenoid I presume?

Ok, cleaning the IVT appears to have worked to lose my P0011 code. Previously I had about 2miles on the car after ECU reset before it CEL came on and threw the code. After cleaning the IVT assembly and resetting ECU have gone 6 miles and no CEL. (yay) For those of you with the P0011 or P0021 code here is how I cleaned my IVT. I was thorough and still did it in under 30 mins.

Removed the engine cover, then removed the three bolts holding the IVT assembly on. Disconnected plug and removed bolt holding solenoid valve assembly from the IVT housing. Both parts were really clean to start with but I did use brake cleaner on both, blew them out with compressed air and then lubed both with Marvel Mystery oil. Tested solenoid for function by applying 12vdc before I put it back in the housing and after to make sure all was good to go.

I did blow out the oil ports in the block and made a helluva mess. Put it all back together, reset ECU and so far so good. Thanks to JHatfie for reminding me that fault codes are not caused by always faulty sensors. Hopefully this is a permananet fix for me this time around.

Spoke too soon. 1.7 miles from cold morning start and the CEL is back on. I will have to pull codes but I'm sure the P0011 has returned.

Is there a IVT solenoid on the rear of engine as well? If so, I guess I would need to check it before I turn my attention towards my cam position sensors.

Ok, I just YouTube'd this and saw this guy testing his IVT solenoid. His valve moves about as much as mine. He believes his to be defective. Should a working solenoid have more movement than the one in this video?

Hey miketyler.... Did you ever get this resolved? I'm throwing the same code (P0011)... I'm gonna remove and clean mine in a few days.

Yes, it ended up being the cheap sensor. Once replaced with an OEM unit, all my issues went away. More details on lessons learned here:

cheap sensorsWork for about a month and then you will be replacing them preferably with Hitachi sensors or you'll be doing it again shortly
