What oil should I be using?

What oil should I be using?
I just bought a 6MT. I don't know much of the repair history, except for carfax stuff, etc. It was checked out by an Infiniti dealership before I bought it.
Without knowing what oil is in it now, what oil should I start using? I've never used syn in my cars before. I know syn lasts longer, but is it necessary? Any special oil filter options I should use?

Im still learning but Mobile1 synthetic is what most of the guys on here use on the vq35 engine.
Btw some people on here get really booty tickled when you don't search for the answer because there are lots of threads like this asking the same question.Sometimes the search engine on this specific website doesn't work quite well so i'd recommend google. Just type in "Oil for G35" or w/e you need to look for.

Thanks. I kinda expected some flack for asking this question I didn't want to Google because I figured I'd just get people reciting what the owner's manual says.
I get really picky about my oil changes, including which filter I use, and I don't usually go with the manufacturer's recommendations. I usually use a slightly heavier weight oil than suggested.

Just use the oil weight/viscosity that is recommended in your Infiniti manual (usually 5w30 or 10w30 depending on ambient temps)
Any decent oil and filter that is changed in the suggested intervals you will be fine.
There are SOOOOOOO many forums, threads, post, webistes, etc... in regards to this. Everyone claims they have the best oil with superior protection. Amsoil, Royal Purple, Mobil 1, Penziol Platinum, Quaker state, Castrol Edge, Valvoline, Redline, etc, etc...
Mobil 1 (#1 factory fill) is great because it is EVERYWHERE. Amsoil (First in synthetics/Extended oil drain intervals) is a great oil, but kinda a pain to get. [It's sold sort of like AVON] Royal Purple HPS is what I run, but only from my own research and personal experience. Honestly, any of the above and you should be just fine. Again as stated before, just use a decent filter.
You could get real crazy with this and sample all the above and others and send in oil analysis's to find out which is the best oil for the VQ, but there are some already out there. Just have to hunt them down.

Thanks so much for the welcome, and for not biting my head off with my obviously n00B question
I have always used Wix filters when I can find them, or Bosch otherwise. Never Fram or K&N, but that's just me.
I have usually used heavier than recommended oils for my Hondas, VWs, etc, especially when the miles get high. I'm thinking about going synthetic with this, mainly because I don't know what oil is in it now. If it is conventional oil now, I don't mind switching to syn. If it is syn now, I don't really want to switch BACK to conventional... if that makes any sense.
I guess 10w-30 is the heavy weight for Mobil1?

I can't comprehend why you wouldn't search, any village idiot can tell that this question would have been asked in the past and there are so many threads out there that have way more information and detail to make your decision based on... so it really comes down to just being lazy.
And if you really care about your car, why would you be so lazy as to not read as much information as you can about making such an important decision such as how to take care of your car via oil choices/intervals/etc?? I just don't understand >.>

Welcome to DRIVER, Scott! Continue using WIX filters, it does it's job better than others! If you have a COSTCO near you they have Mobil 1 synthetic on sale or watch the auto parts stores adds for sale prices. If you have a Infiniti dealership near you they might be able to tell you about your coupes maintenance history....what was used and how often.

Not all members have had good luck with Royal Purple Brooks, that's one synthetic I couldn't recommend!

Royal Purple is overpriced for its performance. Many Cheaper oils perform better.
