Car slow to crank??

So I had an issue of the car being really slow to start, like the battery was drained down. I hooked it up to my battery charger that usually indicates if I have a bad battery or not, and nothing. Charge was at around 13 volts. The charger would take it up to like 15.2 and stop like it should, but the battery would still be around 13 volts. Car started right up...

Now several days later it starts getting slow to start again. Pulled off at a gas station to fill up and it completely was dead, maybe turned over twice then nothing. No clicking heard.

Got a jump(now I have to take my cluster out and fix the gas needle) and drove it home thinking the alternator isn't putting out enough juice. 10 mile drive or so on the interstante. Hooked the battery charger up and again, 13 volts. Charge it, no issues.

I let the battery charge up and took it out. Took it to NAPA and they tested the battery 3 times, tested SAT all three times. I have been working night shift so I am using my lights to and from work and the alternator is fine...Lights haven't been dimming with lights, stereo and winodws rolling up and down...

What gives? I have had the car since Nov '11 and the battery was just replaced. Any comments are welcomed.

If your alternator was putting out enough volts you wouldn't have the light dimming issue. This is why I installed oil/volt gauges so I could tell what was going on under my hood. My volt gauge reads 14.5 volts constantly, you need to have your alternator checked. Plus this may have shortened the life of your battery being worn down constantly....Gary

I think the battery is weakend. Got in the car this morning to come home from work, slow crank again. Get home and put it on the charger, shows 10 volts and 10% charge. Charge for just a few seconds and pulled off the charger, check voltage it's @ 12.3 v and 85% charge.

To me it seems one of the cells were weak. It just sucks where our battieres are @. I use to think my GM was bad.

How clean are your connections to the battery?

Spotless actually. There was an issue a few weeks back of the negative terminal being loose. Fixed that.

JBQ, if your alternator was working correctly you wouldn't need the charger since you drive your car! Can't blame batteries if they're not the source of the problem and you did post you took the battery in and had it checked....remember? I'm on my second battery since SLICK was new without issues.

Jump the car...check the battery terminals with a multimeter. You should be getting 13.8v-14.5v if your alternator is charging properly. If you don't, alternator is bad.

Thanks guys, I will do this in the am when I get off work. I'm guess the battery would be a little easier to replace than the alternator.

This is the only info I have found on alt. replacement.

14.02 V was the reading. Car was warm and the electric fans were on. Seems to not be the alternator.

Yeah, same here it was the battery. This makes the third vehicle to need a battery in a month. I only have one more vehicle in the garage...should just go and change that one just because.

Its the battery man. Either that or you have a parasitic drain somewhere, which can be a real PITA to locate sometimes
