So Im burning oil...
Alright as the title says I am indeed consuming oil at an otherwise unfortunate rate...without this becoming another "oil burning/consumption issue" thread, what are my next steps from here on out?
Mind you, 101k miles 05 coupe. I assume more frequent oil changes as well as more frequently monitoring the oil levels, but after a quick search I had a hard time finding any tips or recommendations for a higher mileage G such as mine. Perhaps a change to a different type of oil? I'm comin from a 300k mile civics that used the same oil throughout their lives. Lookin to keep this VQ at it's very best seeing as this is my DD..500miles a week
Thanks

Well, since you have the "rev-up" engine you have a case of the oil munchies. Seeing as it has been a long time since 2005, unfortunately there is probably no more warranty. From my understanding, the cause of this is the piston rings in this engine tend to go bad pretty quick which causes the oil to shoot up into the cylinder. Of course, I'm not directly diagnosing your car as you could have another cause for the OC issue, but from what I've heard seen and read, that is the general consensus. Hope this helps in some way!

Yes, one is which when you want to finally want to fix it. In general you will need to replace your short block/pistion rings. Either process will require removing/assembling engine. I've read that it may/may not cause the engine to misfire as well. As long as you don't drive it with low/no oil and monitor it, you can be okay but definitely keep an eye out. I would personally address it ASAP.

We have many members with high mileage engines that have the consumption issue who just add oil on a regular basis and have had no other issues. I'm going to disagree with Gbenz and say there's no immediate need to spend thousands on fixing this issue. Just keep the oil full and you should be good to go for a long time.
Some have had success slowing down the consumption by switching from synthetic oil to regular or using a different weight oil such as a 10W-40.

so i just got off the phone with circle Infinti. looks like tomorrow we are going to be getting started with the OC test where they secure the dipstick and have me drive a certain amount of miles to pinpoint exactly how much im burning. sound familiar? whats concerning me now is, should i fall below the allowed rate of consumption, where does this put me now that i am over 100k miles?

Your out of the factory warranty and unless you have an after market warranty (not even sure that would cover it) your paying to confirm you have an OC issue. You definitely have an OC issue confirmed by infiniti and the only sure fix is a new block. It doesn't calculate to a set number for every coupe as to what is being consumed as each of us drive/maintain/race/etc our cars different. We have terrible dipsticks to monitor this, but keep oil in her and she'll be fine.

I bought mine with 92k, its burning about a quart every thousand.. i just reset my odomter trip everytime I hit a thousands miles ill add a quart.. keep it monitored though. the OC issue scared me as well when I found out i just bought a car with a problem like this, but youll be fine..just see how much its burning per 1000 miles, infiniti will tell you how low you are when you bring it back to them at 1000, i was 6mm low on my dipstick which is about a quart.

ive been using mobil 5w-30..pops owned two mobils back in the day and thats all weve ever used in all our cars..recently ive seen that mobil products arent exactly the fan favorite around here
ok sounds good. ill be monitoring it much more frequently now. this may be the only instance where i miss my hondas lol. other than that i dont mind taking out the God forsaken dip stick for a quick peek.
