Advice on Rear Deck Removal

I'm looking for some pointers from anyone who has removed the rear deck on their coupe. I'm getting my windows tinted, but because there are practically no G35's where I live, none of the tint shops have ever worked on one. I have found a shop that does good tint work, and the owner was looking at my car today and didn't think getting the door panels off would be any problem to tint the side windows. But when he was looking at the rear window - and about taking the rear deck out to have better access to the window - he was unsure as to whether the side panels on either side of the rear deck would have to be removed first to get the deck out. Does anyone know if these side panels do have to come off first, and if so where and how are they fastened in place? Are there any pointers anyone can give me to make gaining access to the rear window easier? Thanks so much for your help.

If your tint shop wants to take your car apart to tint your windows you need to find another shop.

The side panels will need to be removed as well as the rear seat. If they're also pulling the door panels off you might as well have them install a whole new stereo because your interior is going to be stripped.

The side panels are held on by a bunch of plastic snaps (6-8 I believe).

you have to pull the seat bottom, then the seat back, then the upper sides, then the lower sides. The plastic tabs are just waiting to be broken if youre not careful, heck my dealer even broke many of them and had to buy some new parts back there.

I can get it apart and back together in 45 mins but I know my way around there now. I'm not sure I'd be real comfortable letting a noob loose on my G like that. I've seen the results (and the subsequent rattles). All it takes is patience and care, but sometimes thats hard to come by unless you do it yourself.

No doubt Meat! I had mine tinted and they where done in about 1.5 hours. Make sure they disable your window switch on the door. You know that little button that allows the window to go down when you shut the door. Just have them take out the srcew in the bottom. That ungrounds it and they can get the window tinted without it messing up.

They wanted to remove the rear deck because the brake light housing is only about 1/4" away from the rear window. Can just the brake light housing be removed? Doesn't seem like it could be worked around if it was left in place.

Thanks,

yes the brake light housing can be removed, if i remember correctly you push in on each side and pull it towards the front of the car.

as I recall, tabs in front, hooks in back. Put your thumbs at bottom of the front.. push in and up. It should rotate up, then pull forward. You have some slack, but you'll need to reach in and release the harness. Easy stuff...
