Taking care of a recently bought 2005 G35
I recently purchased a 2005 G35 coupe 6MT. There are about 67000 miles and I was wondering what I need to do to take care of the car properly. I want my car to be running for a while. What things can I do so that my car will be running properly for a long time.
Welcome to Driver jjlam, "Congratulations" finding a '05 6MT coupe! Were you able to get service records from the previous owner? If not you can check with your closest Infiniti stearlership for what information they may have. Normal scheduled maintenance on our cars is all fluids every 30K miles! Any automotive shop can drain/fill fluids if this wasn't done. Best way to make sure your car will last a long time, quality synthetic oil like AMSOIL 5W/30 and WIX oil filters....change every 4K miles! Good Luck and enjoy the ride....Gary
Anytime I buy a new car I always:
- Check/change oil and filter
- Check/change tranny fluid
- Make sure coolant is right color and topped off, change if necessary
- Same with brake fluid
- Lucas Oil Fuel Treatment into gas tank
- Check for cracks in belts
- Change the spark plugs, although with our cars it is a pain to get to
- Change out the air filter
- Change out the cabin filter
- Dawn wash, clay-bar, Zaino, vacuum
Of course when changing out any of these (air/cabin/plugs), if you see that the part is perfectly fine, I would put it right back in there.

Once all the regular maintenance is done and or verified, check to see if you suffer from oil consumption problems associated with 05-07 6MT's. Check your oil levels regularly.
Washing your car with Dawn detergent? That's "Full on Retarded" and should never ever be done! Dish detergent will damage your paint by removing oils needed to keep it looking good. If you think you need soap to wash your car always use Meguiar's auto soap or any other popular brand....not Dawn!!

The reason to wash with Dawn is to intentionally strip the layer of wax/any oils off, so you can Zaino it, which is exactly what I put in my post. Please look into the Zaino instructions before your call any move "retarded". My 10-year-old G in Caribbean Blue looks better than most newer G's and no, I'm not affiliated with Zaino at all.
From the Zaino website:
BASIC ZAINO APPLICATION TIPS
THREE SIMPLE STEPS to obtain a true Zaino show car finish
Step 1—STRIP THE OLD WAX
Wash the car, going top to bottom, with Dawn Ultra® liquid detergent.
Thoroughly rinse the car with a pressurized hose and spray nozzle. Make sure all detergent soap is gone. Leave Dawn in the kitchen since you'll never use it again on your car.
Dry completely using only clean, soft, absorbent towels.
Step 2—REMOVE CONTAMINANTS AND PREPARE THE SURFACE
Feel all paint surfaces. They should be glassy smooth. Contaminated rough areas are quickly minimized using Zaino Z-18 Claybar™ and a soap and water lubricant. Re-wash and dry the treated areas.
Look for hazy paint, swirl marks or fine scratches. Imperfections are reduced using Zaino's Z-PC Fusion™ paint cleaner and swirl remover.
Add a light coat of Z-AIO™ to all paint as the foundation and bonding agent. Remove with clean, soft towels.
Step 3—APPLY AND REMOVE ZAINO POLISH*
CHOOSE THE RIGHT ZAINO POLISH FOR YOUR VEHICLE'S PAINT
Z-2 PRO™ Show Car Polish is for paint with a clear coat finish—virtually all modern cars.
Z-3™ Show Car Polish is for paint without a clear coat—vintage cars, special aftermarket paint, etc.
Z-5 PRO™ Show Car Polish is just like Z-2, but helps hide swirls and micro scratches in dark color paint.

+1. Its good to use dawn in cases like this. Just not every time...
Also, "Gary" recommends switching to synthetic oils which i disagree with. If the engine has always had regular oil, I've heard numerous mechanics say leave it and don't switch to synthetic. Switching to synthetic should be done at the very first oil change of the engines life or it can result in leaks. Esp if the engine is stock, there is really no point.
Like others said, refer to your owners manual on things to prolong the life of you VQ. I personally would have a certified tech do a basic inspection. Throw your G on a lift and check out everything from an underneath view.
Congrats on the purchase none the less, and enjoy!
