Major Electrical Issue - Interior and Dash lights, ignition, VDC, effected.

03 Coupe 6MT 109k- No mods that would have anything to do with this issue. The car is from Hawaii where it had the engine and transmission replaced with factory new units by the dealer at 50k.

I have searched this and other forums with no success.

This has been creeping up for years but it's finally gotten to be a real problem. I'll start from the beginning.

A few years ago I would be driving and if I bumped the key, the dash would go dark and the radio and climate control would cut out. If I turned the key slightly everything would come back on. It did that occasionally for a long time but it didint really every become a real problem until recently.

One day I was driving enthusiastically and when i shifted hard into 2nd the whole car died momentarily, everything went dark, the engine quit but then immediately it just started back up and lights/radio/ac came back on on its own.

I have also had issues where the SLIP and VDC lights come on for no reason until I turn the car off and start it back up.

And then we have the weird ignition problems. I went out to my car in the morning and noticed the interior lights didn't come on when I opened the door. I put the key in the ignition and nothing happened. No little orange ring around the key, no radio, no climate and it didn't even click over when I turned the ignition. I assumed I had a bad battery so I went to get in my other car but when I shut the door to the G, it honked and the interior lights were lit like they do when you unlock or lock the car. So I got back in and it fired right up. No issues for a couple weeks until today. It did the same thing but no amount of slamming the door would get it to fire up. It's on a charger right now but it was at 12.7 and 70%. Not great but it should have been enough to light up the dash or something.

Any ideas? I really don't want to take this to the dealer and have them start throwing new parts and computers at it.

I would look at replacing the battery, especially if it's the original. The electrical systems on the G seem to be sensitive to charge and even if your mulitmeter seems to think the battery's fine if it's older it might be causing issues.

Long story short, a new battery seems to clear up a lot of electrical gremlins in our cars with old batteries that seem fine.

Alright brother you are going to think there is no way in hell this will fix your car but hear me out. Take the lower dash panel off on the driver side so that you can see the backside of the ignition cylinder. If you look with a flashlight you will see there is a white plastic piece on the back of ignition cylinder(should be a connector plugged into it). This is the electrical portion of the ignition switch and this is your dash light, climate control, and audio issue. Lucky for you that you have a 03 model because you can get this piece separately..maybe $70 or so at the dealer. You can change this yourself with patience...i believe there is one or two screws that hold it on the back of the ignition cylinder. Replaced hundreds of these and they are common on 03 models. This maybe causing the no start issue as well depending on just how bad it is screwed up internally. Pm me if you have any questions

If that's all it is then I am going to be so stoked. I'll dig into it this weekend and let you know how it turns out. Thanks!

No problem bro. While your car is running you will notice that you can turn your key left and right like it has a lot of play in it. Once you replace the electrical portion I mentioned you shouldn't have the left and right play when turning the key back and forth.

i have 06 G35 sedan automatic were on 4 occasions the car had no crank no start or no click. there was no sounds at all i replaced the battery as it was old a week ago and i thought it fixed the problem but again today it happened again. could my problem be a bad or faulty ignition switch? or should i replace my starter first?

Haven't really seen any problems out of the 05-06 models. Of course that doesn't mean that the ignition switch can't go bad as anything is possible. If your car has an I-key it could possibly be the I-key control unit going bad also.
