just give me your guys opinions please

alright so here we go..... my tranny has developed a problem that from what i see is not really common.... my reverse slowly quit engaging.... needless to say i pulled the tranny (5at) and my tranny guy told me i need to either spend 2500 to rebuild my tranny or i need a new one....ive been searching (www.car-part.com) and i can find used ones with 50-75k on them for anywhere from 750 to 1000....now i dont have a ton of extra cash so im looking to u guys for imput. i thought maybe since he told me that the valve body was the start of my problem that i might get a used one and put a shift kit in it and he said that would help. i no he doesnt want me to buy the used one cause he wanted the buisness and the 2500 to rebuild mine but i just dont no if its worth double the money when i can get a used one with a 6 mth warrenty for 1000...... let me no what u guys think.... i have to make a decision soon so all the help u guys give me i appreciate it. thanks again....

I saw a member put up a 6MT trans yesterday, maybe this is time for you to go 6MT?

What kind of warranty is offered on the rebuild? I would go this route because buying a used tranny with only a 6 month warranty, plus the install you wont be far from 2500. Unless you are doing the install yourself. Also, buying used you never know if that tranny was abused.

The shop hasn't quite reached ripping you off level, but they are close. You can buy a full performance rebuild kit and shift kit for less than $800. So they are charging you 1400 in labor. Not outrageous, but it is on the high side.

Best bet is try to find a used low milage tranny and just swap it yourself. It is a one day project and not too difficult. You can find a decent used one for 500-800.

well i dont really gotta pay labor to put it out and in cause my buddie works there and we pulled it out after hrs. so that was just the rebuild of the tranny not the install... i will be doing that myself. i did find one with 35k on it and its in texas for 900 bucks. prolly 200 shipping so like 1100 i can have a used one. they said i have to swap my computer in my valve body into the new one but other then that i think i should be ok. was gonna do the transgo shift kit too so thats 229 from summit racing so i figure about 1400 i should be plus fluid and labor to do the shift kit but that shouldnt be much. what u guys think?

and the reason it was so much was the valve body for a new one is 1100 by its self....

it's pretty rare that your transmission quit like that. Are you sure your mechanic is not pulling your leg on the rebuild?
I'd advise on the used one. Simply because it's a not knows problem for transmission to quit like that. I have 160k on mine and there are no issues. People on here have Gs with over 300k on theirs and no issues with transmissions. Based on that I'd go with a used one.

You might consider getting a second opinion from another trans shop. Never heard of anyone having this issue with a Infiniti AT before. Transgo kits make your trans shift very hard, Search for opinions of other members that have used the kit.
